Two Tigers help Vermont claim soccer cup from New Hampshire
RINDGE, N.H. — Two recent Middlebury Union High School graduates and Tiger soccer standouts gave strong performances representing Vermont in the annual Lions Twin State Soccer Cup in Rindge, N.H., this past Saturday. The Vermont boys’ team beat the New Hampshire all-stars, 5-2.
Connor Collins in particular shone as a central defender, playing all but five minutes of the game, earning some key stops and being honored with the “12th Player” award after the game.
“He was a monster back there, everything he did was what he did last fall to make him co-defensive player of the year in the Lake Division,” said Doc Seubert, his MUHS coach and the assistant coach of the Vermont Twin State team. “He stopped two balls that were going in at a critical juncture in the game; we were only up 2-1 at that point.”
Collins’ Tiger teammate Marrott Weekes also had a strong game, Seubert said. Playing his traditional spot as a central midfielder, Weekes was very solid and consistent, Seubert said.
“He didn’t get a scoring opportunity, but he distributed the ball really well; he was absolutely effective every time he touched the ball,” Seubert said. He noted that Weekes played as part of a four-man midfield that handled New Hampshire’s’ five-man midfield well.
