VERGENNES — Vergennes police on July 10 arrested a 26-year-old man and charged him with domestic assault and cruelty to a child following an incident in a Monkton Road home.
City police allege that Jason L. Brown of Vergennes hit an 8-year-old boy in the head and kicked him at the home. Brown was arrested and charged after police took statements, and he was lodged at the Chittenden County Correctional Center.
In other action between July 8-14, Vergennes police:
• On July 8 stopped at Vergennes Union High School because a door was found open, and heard someone on the roof. Whoever was on the roof fled before he or she could be found.
• On July 8 took a report from a woman who said the other party in a divorce case threatened her while she was walking on a Monkton Road sidewalk; police spoke to her about obtaining a relief-from-abuse order.
• On July 9 were told that a bike had been found at Vergennes Union Elementary School, but it was gone when they arrived.
• On July 9 disposed of an old suitcase that a citizen found abandoned on Meadow Street.
• On July 9 and 10 dealt with a teen heard making threats to his mother. On July 9 a school bus driver heard him make the threat, and police responded to their First Street home and determined that all was OK, but notified Department of Children and Families personnel of the incident. On July 10 the teen was overheard behind the Bixby Library also making another threat and allegedly conducting a drug deal, and police again discussed the case with the DCF.
• On July 10 received a tip about illegal drug activity in the area.
• On July 10 processed Michael Brown, 44, of Panton for driving under the influence of drugs following a two-car accident at the intersection of New Haven Road and Route 7. Police alleged that Brown was “severely impaired” and failed roadside sobriety tests even though his blood-alcohol content was well below the legal limit. They also allege that he had in his possession two narcotic pills. Brown was charged for possessing the pills.
• On July 10 were told that someone driving by in a car shot 12 to 20 BBs at the Northlands Job Corps education building; police were unable to locate the car based on the description.
• On July 10 at the request of John Graham Shelter officials did a walk-through of the building with the department canine.
• On July 11 warned a dog owner whose animal charged out of a South Maple Street home and confronted a woman walking her dog.
• On July 11 brought home a dog that a citizen found on Main Street and recognized as belonging to a Comfort Hill resident.
• On July 12 were told a wallet with $250 in cash, credit cards, IDs and a paycheck had been stolen from a car parked on Alden Place; the paycheck was later found.
• On July 12 took a report that a High Street mailbox had been sawed in half.
• On July 12 handled a minor two-car accident in the Champlain Farms parking lot.
• On July 12 handled a two-car accident at the intersection of West Main Street and Panton Road in which the vehicles were badly damaged. 
• On July 12 looked into a report that a man was selling drugs near Second Street and Panton Road.
• On July 12 notified a city pool official that the vending machine door was open.
• On July 13 calmed a domestic dispute at a Hillside Acres apartment.
• On July 13 went to VUHS after a report that sharp rocks had been left in the road and a road grate had been removed; police cleaned up and notified the school maintenance head.
• On July 13 picked up syringes that were found in trash outside a Main Street business.
• On July 13 called the animal control officer to deal with a dog running loose near the Park Squeeze restaurant.
• On July 14 ticketed an elderly man for driving after his license had been revoked and confiscated his car.
• On July 14 dealt with two complaints about dogs locked in cars; in neither case did police believe the dogs were in danger, but in one case they did warn the owners.
• On July 14 picked up traffic cones that had been moved onto West Street
