ADDISON COUNTY — A two-car crash on Route 22A in Orwell late on the night of July 3 totaled both vehicles and sent one driver to the hospital, where he was still in critical condition early this week.
Vermont State Police responded to a report of the crash at 11:19 p.m. last Wednesday. They report that a 2003 Kia Rio driven by Christopher Christian, 24, of Orwell and a 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse driven by William Lowell, 45, of Orwell collided without providing further details. Christian, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was taken to Fletcher Allen Health Care; on Tuesday he was reported to be in critical condition.
Troopers said the accident was being investigated, and they believed alcohol was a factor. The weather was described as cloudy and the road condition as damp.
Vergennes police helped VSP at the scene.
In other recent activity, Vermont State Police:
•  On July 1 at 8:30 a.m. responded to a one-vehicle accident on Route 125 in Hancock. Police report that William Hewitt, 27, of Benson was driving a 1993 Mack dump truck with a full load of gravel, when the truck began to skid and rolled onto its side colliding with several trees. The trooper judged the truck as a total loss and said because it had dumped its load onto the roadway, Route 125 was restricted to one lane for most of the day while the incident was cleaned up. Hewitt was transported to Ported Hospital in Middlebury, where he was treated and later released with minor cuts and abrasions. The incident is still under investigation.
•  On July 2 at 9:43 p.m. responded to a one-car accident on Route 30 in Cornwall near the Middlebury town line. Police said Jennifer Sabourin, 24, of Shoreham was driving her Chevy Malibu southbound when she reportedly swerved to miss deer in the road. In doing so, Sabourin went off the west side of Route 30 and down a small culvert. The impact of her vehicle hitting the culvert flipped her vehicle. Sabourin was transported to Porter Hospital with scrapes. The Malibu was totaled.
•  On July 3 at 6:04 p.m. went to the scene of a two-car crash in Bridport. Police said a ’99 Subaru Impreza driven by Genevieve Hubbard, 23, of Middlebury failed to yield the right of way at the intersection of East Street and Market Road and pulled out in front of a ’96 Subaru Legacy driven by 18-year-old Wade Steele of Addison. Hubbard’s Impreza sustained driver’s-side damage, Steele’s Legacy sustained front-end damage. Both vehicles were towed from the scene. Hubbard was transported to Porter Medical Center for evaluation. •  Received a report on July 4 at 7:15 a.m. of a burglary at a home on Woods Road in Ferrisburgh near Lake Champlain, where sometime in the last month someone had stripped copper plumbing out of the basement. •  On July 4 at 3 p.m. responded to a report of a swimmer pulled under the water who didn’t resurface in the New Haven River in Bristol below Bartlett Falls. State police, Bristol Fire Department, Middlebury Technical Rescue and Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department officials responded to the scene, but were not successful in locating the man and had to end their search late in the day because of a storm. The next morning they recovered the body of 26-year-old Steven Orvis of Bristol. An obituary for Mr. Orvis appears on Page 6A.
•  On July 4 at 4:33 p.m. were called to a car crash in Starksboro. Police said Joshua Rheaume, 26, of Vergennes was driving a 2009 Toyota Corolla westbound on Route 17  when he hit a guardrail on the south side of the road, and continued to drive along in contact with the guardrail for more than 100 feet. This collision totaled Rheaume’s vehicle. Police charged Rheaume with careless and negligent driving.
•  On July 5 at 2:28 a.m. received an E-911 call about a possible family fight in Pittsford, and troopers found Kristen L. Parker, 32, dead inside the residence. Parker’s boyfriend, 35-year-old Christopher Sharrow of Pittsford, was also at the residence with three young children. Sharrow was arraigned on Monday on a charge of second-degree murder, to which he pleaded innocent.
Addisonindependent.com initially reported that Parker was a Bristol resident, but further reporting revealed that she was actually a Rutland resident.
•  On July 5 beginning at approximately 10:50 a.m. assisted the U.S. Forest Service in locating a person missing from Moosalamoo Campground in Goshen. The 26-year-old Pittsford man had been last seen on the evening of July 4. Members of the Forest Service, VSP, Fish and Wildlife Department, a VSP K9 and the Brandon Area Rescue Squad searched the area for the male. He was located in the woods at the campground at approximately 2 p.m.
•  On July 5 began investigating a burglary complaint from a resident of Fuller Mountain Road in Ferrisburgh, where a break-in reportedly occurred between 3 and 5:40 p.m. that day. Anyone with information is asked to contact VSP.
•  On July 6 at 1:50 a.m. received a complaint that someone was moving around suspiciously outside a Hathaway Road home in Goshen. It was found an item had been stolen from a vehicle at the residence. Brandon police assisted troopers with the call. Anyone with information is asked to contact the VSP.
•  On July 6 at 2:22 a.m. were called to a Route 7 home in Salisbury for a male who was intoxicated and being disorderly. Police identified the male as 22-year-old Kraton Chaloux, who police said became very agitated and combative toward the officers. Police took Chaloux into custody and cited him for simple assault, disorderly conduct, assault on a law enforcement officer, assault on a law enforcement officer with bodily fluids, resisting arrest and violation of conditions of release. He was lodged at the Marble Valley Correctional Center in Rutland with bail set at $15,000.
•  On July 6 responded with Vergennes police to a one-vehicle crash on Route 22A in Panton. Police said a Glens Falls, N.Y., man and his girlfriend were headed to a birthday party in Hinesburg with a three-year-old girl that the girlfriend was babysitting when the car they were driving left the roadway and went into a ditch. The trooper said her investigation suggests that the child seat the little girl was riding in was fastened incorrectly and caused the seat to fall forward, allowing the child’s head to hit the front passenger seat. Minor bruising was reported and the child was seen at Porter Hospital as a precautionary measure. No charges were levied.
Vermont State Police would like to remind people how important it is to fasten children in the appropriate size seats that are properly fastened to the vehicle’s seat. Concerned citizens are encouraged to contact their local law enforcement agency to speak with a child seat expert if they have any installation questions.
•  On July 6 at 2:52 p.m. responded to a one-vehicle crash on Route 116 in Bristol. Police report that Kimberly S. Camp-Lizotte, 42, of Bristol was driving a 2003 Chevy Trailblazer southbound on Route 116 when the vehicle traveled off the road approximately two times in three-quarters of a mile. Upon leaving the road the second time Camp-Lizotte collided with three mailboxes and then hit a tree. The Trailblazer then spun back onto the road and came to rest in the southbound lane on its roof. Camp-Lizotte sustained contusions and lacerations and was taken to Porter Hospital by the Bristol Rescue Squad. The trooper processed Camp-Lizotte for suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, and results of the blood test were pending as of press time. Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Bristol Fire Department.
•  On July 6 at 8 p.m. responded to a vandalism complaint on Lake Street in Addison — a window was damaged. Anyone with information is asked to contact VSP.
•  On July 6 at 11 p.m. responded to a campsite on Lake Dunmore Road in Salisbury for a family disturbance. As a result, troopers cited Michael Tirrito, 37, of Winooski for violation of an abuse prevention order and lodged him at the Marble Valley Correctional Center for lack of $10,000 bail.
•  On July 7 at 1:03 a.m. stopped a motor vehicle on West Street in Bristol for a motor vehicle infraction. Police cited the driver, identified as Bradley M. Ploof, 29, of Bristol, for driving under the influence.
•  On July 7 at 4:51 p.m. responded to a one-car crash on Upper Notch Road in Bristol. Police said the driver, identified as Joshua Turk, 23, of Bethel, was traveling too fast for the conditions and lost control of his Honda and collided with a tree. Turk, who sustained minor injuries and was released by the rescue squad, was cited for careless and negligent driving.
•  On July 7 at 8 p.m. received a report of a burglary at a Route 7 home in Leicester, where several items were reported stolen.
•  On July 7 at 9:17 p.m. responded to a one-car crash on Route 116 South in Bristol. Police said Nicole Berry, 22, of Middlebury lost control of the 2009 Subaru Impreza she was driving and hit a tree on the shoulder of the roadway. Berry did not sustain any injuries, but the car was considered a total loss.
•  On July 7 at 9:25 p.m. stopped a car driven by 26-year-old Hinesburg resident Brandon Evarts on Route 116 in Starksboro. During the stop, Evarts was found to be in possession of a regulated substance for which he did not have a prescription. Evarts was cited for possession of a regulated substance.
•  On July 8 began investigating the theft of a 2005 blue Yamaha Bruin 4X4 ATV from a farm off Route 125 in Cornwall. The ATV has a plow and winch attached to it and is worth approximately $3,000. The VIN number is 5Y4AH09YX5A020500. Anyone with information is asked to contact VSP.
In an effort to reduce crashes and remove impaired drivers from Vermont highways the VSP will be participating in “Operation Sober Summer.” This data-driven campaign will consist of motor vehicle enforcement in an attempt to combat aggressive driving and reduce crashes. Through June there were 26 deaths in 25 crashes on Vermont roadways in 2013. In 2012 there were 40 deaths in 35 crashes. In the first six months of 2011, the year with the fewest crash fatalities since 1944, there were 21 fatalities.
Operation Sober Summer will include saturation patrols and checkpoints in high crash areas throughout the state.
