VERGENNES — Vergennes police last week arrested two county men on drug charges in separate incidents. Police lodged both at the Chittenden County Correctional Center.
On May 31, Vergennes police after an investigation with Bristol police arrested John Caton Lawrence, 44, of Bristol and cited him for illegally selling prescription pain medication and violating his conditions of release. Police made the arrest in Bristol after, according to Bristol Police Chief Kevin Gibbs, officers from the Vergennes and Bristol forces had observed Lawrence sell narcotics on multiple occasions.
On May 29, Vergennes police arrested Christopher Sumner, 21, of Ferrisburgh and cited him for allegedly possessing about 351 milligrams of heroin and two grams of marijuana. Police said the arrest was made after Sumner pulled a car with defective equipment into the Champlain Farms parking lot in front of them.
In other incidents between May 27 and June 2, Vergennes police:
•  On May 27 ordered a car abandoned on Green Street to be towed; police said it was from Quebec.
•  On May 27 helped a motorist locked out of a car in the Shaw’s parking lot.
•  On May 27 cited a motorist for possession of a small quantity of marijuana following a North Main Street traffic stop.
•  On May 27 helped the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad at the Hillside Acres apartment complex.
•  On May 27 and 28 dealt with minor two-car accidents on Main Street.
•  On May 28 accepted a red bicycle found on Route 7.
•  On May 28 alerted the fire department to a fire in a School Street compost pile.
•  On May 28 responded to an Ice House Court report of a suspicious vehicle and found a man pulled over to make a phone call.
•  On May 29 helped VARS on Second Street.
•  On May 29 looked into a report of a child not properly secured in a car seat.
•  On May 29 called the Counseling Service of Addison County to help a woman at a Main Street apartment building.
•  On May 30 cited a New York resident for marijuana possession after stopping his car on West Main Street for going 53 mph in a 30 mph zone.
•  On May 30 responded to a loose dog complaint at Vergennes Union High School.
•  On May 30 cited a Peacham resident for possession of a small amount of marijuana.
•  On May 30 and 31 and June 1 participated in a regional Click-It or Ticket seatbelt enforcement campaign.
•  On May 31 secured a Main Street business found unlocked after hours.
•  On May 31 helped a motorist locked out of a car on Comfort Hill.
•  On May 31 went to Northlands Job Corps when a student refused to let center security search a backpack; with city police present the student complied, and alcohol was found.
•  On May 31 called VARS to help an unresponsive woman who was found in a car at Champlain Farms.
•  On June 1 cited Samantha Morin, 29, of Monkton for driving under the influence of alcohol after stopping her car on Route 7 in Waltham.
•  On June 1 tried to contact the owner of a car left in the United Technologies parking lot for the past two weeks.
•  On June 1 called Northfield police after a John Graham Shelter resident complained that her ex-husband, a Northfield resident, had violated his conditions of release by contacting her.
•  On June 1 cited Michael Atherton, 30, for a criminal count of driving with a suspended license.
•  On June 1 cited Christopher Lawless, 32, of Ferrisburgh for DUI. Police said they found Lawless after receiving a complaint about a suspicious vehicle pulling into a Church Street driveway with its lights out, and they alleged his roadside blood-alcohol content tested at 0.244 percent, about three times the legal limit for driving of 0.08.
•  On June 2 backed up Vermont State Police at what police said was an underage drinking party in Waltham at which VSP ticketed three youths.
•  On June 2 helped VSP by going to Ferrisburgh to look for a man involved in a domestic assault; the search was unsuccessful.
•  On June 2 found and warned two youths who had taken a man’s weed whacker from a Second Street shed, and returned the tool.
•  On June 2 accepted a Visa card that a resident found.
•  On June 2 checked out a complaint that youths were swimming in Otter Creek.
•  On June 2 checked out the welfare of female residents of School Street and the Hillside Acres apartments; both were found to be fine.
