MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police are investigating two recent cases of burglars entering local homes to steal copper pipes.
Authorities were first called to a Route 7 South residence on May 27, where, police said, someone had entered the basement of the home to steal some copper tubing.
Then, on May 29, police began investigating the attempted theft of some copper tubing from the basement of an Exchange Street residence. Police said someone was able to loosen the tubing, but had not had a chance to remove it.
In other action last week, Middlebury police:
•  Assisted a woman who on May 27 reported receiving harassing text messages from a man.
•  Responded to reports of shots fired in the Route 30 area on May 28. Police said the shots had been fired by some people who had been skeet shooting.
•  Launched an investigation into an alleged sexual assault in the Elm Street area on May 28.
•  Received a report that some guns had been stolen from an Airport Road residence on May 29. Police continue to investigate the matter.
•  Were informed that a Jayne Court resident had overdosed on medication on May 29. The Middlebury Volunteer Ambulance Association took the patient to Porter Hospital.
•  Received a report that a vehicle had been vandalized while parked in the South Village Green garage on May 29.
•  Investigated a report of an elderly man allegedly trying to enter vehicles parked at the Hannaford Supermarket parking lot on May 29.
•  Were informed of the theft of a truck radiator from an Ossie Road residence on May 29.
•  Investigated a report of a vehicle leaving the scene of an accident in the Maple Street area on May 29.
•  Served a no-trespass order on a non-student on May 29 who was not wanted on the Middlebury Union High School campus.
•  Served an abuse prevention order on a Court Street resident on May 30.
•  Responded to a report of a man allegedly seen loading a rifle by a car in the Bakery Lane area on May 30. Police found no such person upon their arrival.
•  Investigated a report of some young people blocking traffic and yelling at cars on Maple Street on May 30. Police encountered some juveniles in the area who denied being responsible.
•  Assisted MVAA staff with a dazed and confused elderly patient on May 30.
•  Received a report of a possible domestic dispute in a vehicle parked off Court Street on May 30. The vehicle was gone when police got there.
•  Were informed on May 30 that someone had written graffiti on the wall of the boys’ bathroom at MUHS on May 30.
•  Received a report that someone had stolen a Civil War-era knife from a home on Sidney Way on May 30. Police said the knife had “EB Arms” engraved on it.
•  Assisted a local woman whom mental health counselors believed might harm herself on May 31.
•  Responded to a report of a disruptive patient at Porter Hospital on May 31. Police said Counseling Service of Addison County officials tended to the patient.
•  Cited Katelynn McPhail, 20, of Middlebury for domestic assault following an incident in the South Pleasant Street area on May 31.
•  Calmed a disruptive patient at Porter Hospital on May 31.
•  Found a used syringe beneath the Cross Street Bridge on May 31.
•  Received a report that some jewelry was missing from a Court Street residence on May 31.
•  Cited David Butler, 44, of Starksboro for driving under the influence on Route 7 South on June 1, following a be-on-the-lookout warning that had been issued to area police agencies.
•  Warned some Otterside Court residents who had been hosting a loud party on June 1.
•  Investigated a report of a man breaking the car windshield of another man with whom he had been arguing on Court Street on June 1.
•  Cited April Hallock, 37, of Middlebury for driving under the influence following a stop for erratic driving on Park Street on June 1.
•  Cited Kyle Gingras, 21, of Middlebury for driving under the influence after investigating reports of a “suspicious vehicle” in the South Street area on June 1.
•  Got medical help for a local woman who had overdosed on medication on June 2.
•  Took, to Porter Hospital, a Weybridge Street resident who was having a mental health crisis on June 2.
•  Responded to a family dispute at a Ledgewood Court residence on June 2.
•  Investigated a report of a drunken man repeatedly falling off his bike on Munger Street on June 2. Police turned the man over to his father.
•  Oversaw the departure of an unwanted man from a Weybridge Street residence on June 2.
•  Responded to a call from Porter Hospital, where a man on June 2 was making some of the other patients nervous.
