Locals win gold at D-II state track and field meet
FAIR HAVEN — Vergennes Union High School senior Jon Welch and Middlebury freshman Hannah Buttolph won events at Saturday’s Division II track and field championship meet, which Fair Haven Union High School hosted.
Welch defended his title in the boys’ 110-meter hurdles, while Buttolph earned a first-place tie in the girls’ high jump.
The Commodores’ four-by-100-meter relay team of Welch, Sebby Crowell, Lane Kessler and Chris Castillo also brought home gold, as did the Tigers’ 4×800 squad of James Hare, Andrew Edwards, Sam Ferguson and Max Moulton.
A number of other athletes scored points for their teams, notably MUHS senior James Pecsok, who was second in the boys’ javelin, and VUHS senior Austin Beamish, who placed in three events.
Also scoring points in individual events for MUHS were Hare, Moulton, Akeem Pottinger, Naina Horning, Danielle Morris, Julia Vorsteveld and Ali Sheldrick. On the relays, the Tiger boys’ 4×400 team placed second, the Tiger girls’ 4×400 team and the boys’ 4×100 team each finished fifth, and the MUHS girls’ 4×800 quartet was sixth.
Also picking up points for VUHS were Eddie Devino, Lane Kessler, Jordan Stearns, Abbey Baker, Alix Kauffman and Paige Stolen. The VUHS girls’ 4×400 team took second, and the girls’ 4×100 team was fifth.
Henry Koenig and Amanda Vincent scored top-six finishes for Mount Abe.
U-32 won both the boys’ and girls’ team competitions. The boys’ scores were U-32, 111; 2. Harwood, 103; 3. Fair Haven, 62; 4. Windsor, 55; 5. Missisquoi, 54; 6. (tie) MUHS and Lyndon, 46; 8. VUHS, 43; 9. Milton, 18; 10. Rice. 14; and 11. (tie) Mount Abe and Hartford, 2.
The girls’ scores were 1. U-32, 137; 2. Harwood, 110; 3. Hartford, 66; 4. Windsor, 58; 5. Fair Haven, 42; 6. Milton, 39; 7. Rice, 32; 8. MUHS, 29; 9. VUHS, 19; 10. Missisquoi, 12; 11. Lyndon, 10; 12. Mount Abe, 4.
