High School Softball Wrap-up: Commodores, Otters, Eagles all advance in playoffs

ADDISON COUNTY — The Vergennes and Mount Abraham union high school softball teams won first-round Division II home playoff games on Tuesday and Otter Valley won on Wednesday, but Middlebury lost on the road in its D-I match-up on Tuesday.
The No. 7 Otter Valley Union High School softball team broke an early 2-2 tie on Wednesday on the way to a 12-2 win over visiting No. 10 Lake Region in a Division II first-round game.
The 10-7 Otters are scheduled, weather permitting, to travel to Lyndon on Friday to take on the No. 2 Vikings (15-1) in a quarterfinal. LRU finished at 8-9.
On Wednesday, OV pitcher Taylor Aines wild-pitched home a run in the first and allowed another run in the second, when she issued three of her five walks. But she allowed just two hits and struck out eight and shut down LRU the rest of the way.
Meanwhile, OV used 10 hits, eight walks from LRU starter Michelle Thibault (five runs in three innings) and reliever Hannah Leroux (seven runs in three innings) and six Ranger errors to pile up their runs.
The Otters broke the tie in the third when Olivia Bloomer tripled and Cortney Poljacik followed with an infield hit. Poljacik scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-2.
Leadoff hitter Brittany Bushey reached base five times, scored three runs and stroked two hits for OV. Bloomer added a double to her triple.
The No. 3 Commodores pounded No. 14 Bellows Falls, 29-0, to earn another home game. VUHS (13-4) is scheduled to host No. 6 U-32 (10-5) on Friday afternoon. The D-I semifinals are set for Tuesday; No. 2 Lyndon is a potential VUHS foe.
On Tuesday, Dani Brown tossed a five-inning one-hitter to earn the shutout, and also drove in four runs with a pair of hits. Taylor Paquette matched Brown’s RBI output with four of her own, and K.C. Ambrose added a pair of hits in the Commodores’ offensive outburst.
CORRECTION: Paquette, not Brown, earned the pitching win in the Commodores’ victory at Spaulding on May 30. Brown started, but Paquette came on in relief to get the win, which clinched the No. 3 seed for VUHS.
The No. 8 Eagles cruised past No. 9 Mill River, 13-6, on Tuesday, as Haley Davis tossed a four-hitter for the Eagles. Kelsey Haskins went three-for-three for Mount Abe, drove in two runs and walked twice to lead the Eagle attack. Tiffany Tracey added three RBIs, and Melanie Rotax doubled.
Next up for the Eagles is a Friday date at undefeated and top-seeded BFA-Fairfax.
No. 2 Colchester (15-2) kept its outstanding season rolling by blanking the Tigers on Tuesday, 10-0. Justina Baker took the loss for MUHS, which finished at 3-13.
