Commodore hurdler, Tiger jumper, two local relay teams win gold at state meet
FAIR HAVEN — Vergennes Union High School senior Jon Welch and Middlebury freshman Hannah Buttolph won events at Saturday’s Division II championship meet, which Fair Haven Union High School hosted.
Welch defended his title in the boys’ 110-meter hurdles, while Buttolph earned a first-place tie in the girls’ high jump.
The Commodores’ four-by-100-meter relay team of Welch, Sebby Crowell, Lane Kessler and Chris Castillo also brought home gold, as did the Tigers’ 4×800 squad of James Hare, Andrew Edwards, Sam Ferguson and Max Moulton.
A number of other athletes scored points for their teams, notably MUHS senior James Pecsok, who was second in the boys’ javelin, and VUHS senior Austin Beamish, who placed in three events.
U-32 won both the boys’ and girls’ team competitions. The MUHS boys tied for sixth place with Lyndon for the best local team finish with 46 points. The Commodores were right behind in eighth (43), and Mount Abraham was tied for 11th.
The MUHS girls were eighth (29), the VUHS girls were ninth (19), and the Eagle girls were 12th.
Full results for all participants will be published on Thursday.

• 4×400: 2. MUHS.
• 4×800: 1. MUHS, 8:38.24.
• High jump: 3. Akeem Pottinger, MUHS; 5. Henry Koenig, Mt. Abe.
• Long jump: 4. Beamish, VUHS.
• Triple jump: 5. Naina Horning, MUHS; 6. Austin Beamish, VUHS.
• Shot put: 6. Jordan Stearns, VUHS.
• Javelin: 2. Pecsok, MUHS.
