Jona Scott, Eagle golfers win sectional tourney
RUTLAND — The Mount Abraham Union High School golf team won Tuesday’s South Sectional at the Rutland Country Club while senior Jona Scott claimed medalist honors at the sectional event for the third straight spring.
Scott’s two-over-par 72 led the Eagles to a score of 349, a total that easily outdistanced runner-up Mill River, which scored 375 while being led by Johann Russell’s 76. Woodstock (379) became the third qualifier.
Joining the three Southern qualifiers on June 5 at the Division II tournament at the Woodstock Country Club will be Tuesday’s three Northern Sectional qualifiers from the St. Johnsbury Country Club: Lyndon (331), Montpelier (355) and Rice (361).
Also scoring for the Eagles on Tuesday were Carson Sanchez, 82; Matt Sweeney, 92; and Eric Raymond, 103.
Scott, a senior who told the Rutland Herald he plans to play golf for the University of Rochester, birdied one hole and bogeyed three holes on Tuesday.
Two Otter Valley golfers competed as individuals on Tuesday. Garrett Robin fired a 99, and Colin Nicklaw carded a 108.
