Area track and field teams vie at major invitational

BURLINGTON — Athletes from the Middlebury, Vergennes and Mount Abraham union high school track teams scored points with top-six finishes on this past Friday and Saturday at the Burlington Invitational, a major midseason meet that drew dozen of teams.
The Essex boys’ and girls’ teams prevailed overall. The Tiger girls were 14th among 21 teams that managed to score points, followed by the Eagles in 16th and the Commodores in 18th.
The Tiger boys were 16th, and the VUHS boys were 18th among 27 teams that scored at least one top-six finish.
The Commodores’ Lane Kessler had the best individual finish at the meet, taking third in the 300 hurdles. The VUHS girls’ four-by-400-meter relay team of Ruby Dombek, Paige Stolen, Abbey Baker and Alix Kauffman also picked up points with a sixth-place finish.
Hannah Buttolph’s fourth-place effort in the girls’ high jump paced MUHS. Max Moulton at 800 meters and James Pecsok in the javelin each claimed fifth-place finishes, and the Tiger boys’ 4×400 relay team of James Hare, Naina Horning, Sam Ferguson and Moulton finished sixth.
