VUHS wins four events in eight-team track meet

SOUTH BURLINGTON — At an eight-team meet on Thursday at South Burlington, Vergennes Union High School track and field athletes won four events, two by senior Jon Welch.
Welch took the 40-yard dash in 4.9, and won the 200-meter hurdles in 27.64.
Also winning events were Austin Beamish and Jordan Stearns. Beamish took the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, four inches, and Stearns won the triple jump with a 34-foot, two-inch effort.
Alix Kauffman and Abbey Baker led the Commodore girls. Kauffman was second at 150 meters (21.5), and Baker took second in the long jump (14-6). The two also joined teammates Ruby Dombek and Samara Sausville to earn second in the four-by-400-meter relay (4:39.4).
Team scores were not kept.
Commodore top-six finishers in other boys’ events were:
• 150-meter sprint: 6. Sebby Crowell, 19.14.
• 600-meter run: 3. Lane Kessler, 1:37.40.
• 200 hurdles: 3. Kessler, 28.44; 6. Beamish, 29.14.
• 4×400: 3. 3:51.9 (Kessler, Crowell, Chris Castillo, Eddie Devino).
• Long jump: 3. Castillo, 16-1.5; 6. Stearns, 15-9.
• Triple jump: 2. Beamish, 33-10; 5. Castillo.
Commodore top-six finishers in other girls’ events were:
• 150-meter sprint: 5. Baker, 22.14; 6. Dombek, 22.34.
• 600-meter run: 3. Sausville, 1:55.9.
• Long jump: 5. Dombek, 13-4.
• Javelin: Ally Stearns, 60-8.
• Shot put: 6. Stearns, 26-4.
