VERGENNES — Bixby Library will hold a public reading of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” on Tuesday, April 16 at 1 p.m.
 
The reading will be led by librarian Dianne Lawson and was planned in correlation with the event of worldwide public readings being sponsored by the Birmingham Public Library to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the day King began writing the letter. Readings will be held at various locations across the nation and around the world, including schools, museums, universities, street corners and public parks, and Bixby Library will participate as one of the locations.
Written by King in response to criticism from colleagues concerning his work, the letter outlines the environment in Birmingham and the South in 1963, provides a picture of King’s strong belief in racial equality and eloquently showcases his attitudes about organized religion and the basis of his belief in nonviolent demonstrations as a vehicle for change.
The public is invited to hear the letter read aloud and to read a paragraph or two, if desired. The event is free and open to the public and no reservations are required. For more information call the Bixby at 877-2211.
