New Shoreham town office nears completion
MIDDLEBURY — Work on Shoreham’s new town office building is proceeding nicely, and the 2,000-square-foot structure should be ready to accommodate municipal staff and records before the end of this spring.
“It’s going well,” Shoreham Selectman Sandy Witherell said on Thursday of construction at the worksite on the town green, near the current town office building.
“I will be very happy when it’s done.”
So will Town Clerk Amy Douglas and other municipal officials who have been making the best of it in the current, 600-square-foot office building. The new structure, approved by voters at the 2012 town meeting, will provide ample work, meeting and records-storage space for the community.
Recent work has focused on the vault, Witherell said. He explained it will take a while for the vault area to be ready, as it has involved the use of a lot of concrete. And concrete takes time to cure.
“This has been the big challenge,” he said of the vault.
But other elements of the project are humming along, officials noted. The exterior of the building has completely taken shape, including the siding and shingled roof. Witherell said he expected final insulation work to be performed this week, followed by interior sheet rocking and finishing touches, to include painting, flooring and installation of doors.
Shoreham officials are also heartened by the fact that the project is coming together within the not-to-exceed budget of $442,000. Residents last year agreed to finance the project through a five-year, $160,000 loan along with $290,000 that had accrued in Shoreham’s town office reserve fund.
