MONTPELIER — The Vermont Principals’ Association announced in February that longtime Vergennes Union High School employee Vincent “Roland” Guyette will be among the Class of 2013 inductees into the VPA Hall of Fame.
According to the VPA press release, Guyette was chosen because he“Served VUHS students for over 30 years as coach, AD, and mentor.”
Guyette has also worked at VUHS as a driver’s education teacher. Since his formal retirement in 2000 has continued to serve the school as a groundskeeper, announcer at home basketball games, and timekeeper and scorekeeper at soccer, lacrosse and baseball games.
In September 2011, VUHS honored Guyette — a former longtime Vergennes resident who now lives in Waltham — by naming its athletics fields after him.
Guyette, a 54-year public education veteran, joined the VUHS faculty as the driver’s education teacher in 1967; he continued in that position until 2000.
During his VUHS tenure, he spent 30 years coaching teams that included junior varsity girls’ basketball, JV and varsity baseball, girls’ varsity soccer, and JV and varsity boys’ soccer.
He also served two tenures as the VUHS athletic director and was the school’s official groundskeeper from 1990 to 1999.
Guyette, a Troy native and Newport High graduate, and the rest of the VPA’s dozen inductees will be inducted in Montpelier on May 3.
The ceremony will take placeat the Capitol Plaza Hotel at 100 State St. A social hour will begin at 5 p.m., with a meal and ceremony following at 6 p.m. Reservation information can be found at www.vpaonline.org or (802) 229-0547.
 The VPA Hall of Fame was founded in 2003 to recognize the outstanding careers of educational leaders, participants in student activities and athletics, members of the media, and contributors from the public who positively impacted the lives of Vermont youth.
VPA Hall of Fame nominees have excelled in one or more high school athletic or fine arts programs sponsored by the VPA.
This year’s other inductees are:
•  Steve Houghtonof Burr & Burton Academy, a coach, AD, and assistant headmaster who helped found the VPA Hall of Fame.
•  Tom Conteof St. Johnsbury Academy, St. Johnsbury, a longtime AD, VPA committee chairman and advocate for student-athletes and his community.
•  Jasmyn Huntington of Oxbow High School, a prolific scorer for the Olympians in the mid-1990s.
•  Erin Sullivanof Mt. Mansfield, a Vermont, New England, and national champion cross-country runner.
•  Oliver “Ollie” Dunlapof BFA St. Albans, a football, basketball and track athlete.
•  Rory Grimesof St. Johnsbury, a basketball, track and soccer athlete considered to be one of the finest point guards in state history.
•  Denny Miles of Northfield, who officiated soccer for three decades and umpired baseball and softball for more than 20 years.
•  Birger Vigsnes of Mount Anthony Union High School, a soccer and Nordic skiing coach.
•  Orrie Jayof Burlington High School, a baseball coach who compiled a 323-94 mark in 29 years.
•  Alan Plante of Mount Anthony, who coached baseball for 37 years and basketball for 39 years.
•  Steve FerreiraofEssex High School, who served 43 years as a baseball coach and is the state leader in career wins with 527.
