Tiger sports teams out of playoffs

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey and girls’ basketball teams dropped Division I postseason games this past Wednesday. The Tiger girls’ hockey team was edged in a semifinal game on Saturday.
The No. 9 boys’ hockey team lost a quarterfinal at top-seeded South Burlington, 8-2. Keenan Bartlett scored both goals, and goalie Edgar Sherman made 31 saves as the Tigers finished at 6-13-2, a record that included a first-round playoff win at Spaulding. The Rebels improved to 19-2.
The No. 14 Tiger girls lost at No. 3 Essex, 40-11, in a first-round game. The Hornets moved to 16-5. Erin Connor scored four points as the Tigers finished at 5-15 after winning five times in their final 10 regular-season outings.
The the No. 6 MUHS girls’ hockey team came up short at No. 2 North Country, 3-2.
The Tigers finished the season at 13-9, including an overtime playoff win at No. 3 Rutland and a win at No. 1 Harwood in their regular season finale that showed they were a threat for the D-II title. Coach Tim Howlett said the team also played well on Saturday, but ran into some bad luck and a hot goaltender.
The Falcons took a 2-0 lead, but Timi Carone scored in the final minute of the second to make it 2-1. NCU scored early in the third, but Carone found the net again to make it 3-2. Howlett said the Tigers had plenty of chances after that, right down to when he pulled goalie Baily Ryan (seven saves) with 1:04 to go, but couldn’t equalize.
