Commodore track and field team tunes up for state meet

NORTHFIELD — Another first-place finish for senior hurdler Jon Welch highlighted the efforts of a small contingent from the Vergennes Union High School indoor track and field team on Saturday at Norwich University.
Welch won the 55-meter hurdles in 8.24, and was joined in scoring points in the event by teammate Austin Beamish, who finished sixth in 9.24.
Those were the only points the Commodores scored on the day, as they did not compete in the relay races that have been productive for them in recent weeks. Sophomore Ally Stearns, who has enjoyed a successful season, finished out of the top six in the girls’ shot put — Stearns was 12th with a toss of 27 feet, 2.5 inches.
The meet was the last of the regular season: Norwich will host the daylong winter indoor track championship meet on Feb. 16.
Also competing on Saturday for the VUHS boys were:
•  Jared Miedema, 10th at 1,000 meters in 2:59.50.
•  Beamish, 12th in the triple jump at 35-8.
•  Chris Castillo, 15th in the triple jump at 35-5.5.
•  Steve Van Wyck, 16th in the shot put at 34-2.
Competing for the VUHS girls were:
•  Alix Kauffman, 17th at 300 meters in 47.24, and 28th in the 55 hurdles in 11.64.
•  Abbey Baker, 18th in the 300 at 47.64.
•  Jo Tatlock, 89th in the 300 at 59.54.
Mount Abraham’s Natalie May ran the 1,000, finishing 23rd in 3:46.40.
