VUHS, Mount Abe track and field athletes compete at UVM

BURLINGTON — Members of the Vergennes Union High School indoor track team won three events on Saturday at the University of Vermont while placing in seven others.
The strong showing allowed the Commodore boys’ team to finish fifth out of 18 teams competing, while the Commodore girls took 10th out of 22 squads.
Senior Jon Welch sparked the VUHS boys’ team by winning the 55-meter dash, taking second in the 55-meter hurdles, and anchoring the Commodores’ first-place four-by-200-meter relay team. Also running on that relay team were Sebby Crowell, Chris Castillo and Lane Kessler.
Sophomore shot-putter Ally Stearns broke through to win that event and lead the girls’ efforts, while senior Abbey Baker contributed points with a fourth-place finish at 600 meters.
Two Mount Abraham athletes also competed on Saturday at UVM, and both placed in at least one event. Asa Learmonth took third in both the boys’ 300 meters (40.14) and 600 meters (1:32.50), and finished fifth at 55 meters (7.14). Natalie May finished sixth in the girls’ 1,600 (6:27.10), and also finished 10th at 1,000 meters (3:51.9).
