VUHS rowers fare well at New England event
BOSTON, Mass. — Three teams from the Vergennes Union High School rowing club each posted top-three finishes in their divisions at the Nov. 17 New England Youth Rowing Championships held in Boston, Mass., at which 28 teams in all competed in three divisions.
According to team coach Dennis West, in each division the teams raced three times, and the times from the three races were combined to determine the winners.
The top VUHS team of Emily Weber, Rachel Clark, Stephen Van Wyck, Cody Hutchins, Jon Welch and Austin Beamish competed in the First Oar Division and ended up second overall by a 45-second margin. West said the team might well have won it all, but lost about a minute-and-a-half in the first race after getting bumped.
The Intermediate team of Emily Martin, Bailey Dieterle, Glen Childers, Josh Cook, Alex Brinkman, Ben Thompson and Cynthia Holler also finished second after a tough first race. The team finished fifth in the opening event and then won their next two races, but could not quite make up the lost ground, West said.
The VUHS novice team of Emily Delgadillo, Levi Baldwin, Shawnna VanderWey, Lillian Hubbard, Reggie Grady, Evan Goldring and Courtney Morin put in three consistent performances and took third overall: The group finished third in their first and third races and second in their second race.
