OVUHS students bring ‘Legally Blonde’ to the stage Nov. 15

BRANDON — Otter Valley Union High School’s Walking Stick Theater Company will present the Broadway musical Legally Blonde Nov. 15-18.
Twenty-five student actors, 25 student technicians and eight teachers will be taking part. Jeff Hull, who directs the school’s Theater Arts program, says audiences will be blown away by the energy and level of difficulty of the show, which just became available for production outside professional theaters.
The story is based on the novel “Legally Blonde” by Amanda Brown and the 2001 hit movie of the same name starring Reese Witherspoon. The musical version of “Legally Blonde” opened on Broadway in 2007 and ran for over a year.
The musical tells the story of Elle Woods, a California sorority girl who enrolls at Harvard Law School to win back her ex-boyfriend. While at Harvard, Elle discovers how her knowledge of the law can help others and successfully defends an exercise queen in a murder trial.
Jeff Hull says it’s a very high-energy show that works especially well for high schools and he’s excited to bring it to Otter Valley. Since it’s a new production, he says students can relate well to the dialog and situations. But he says the degree of difficulty of the choreography and musical numbers should impress audiences.
“Legally Blonde” will be performed at Otter Valley Union High School Thursday, Friday and Saturday, November 15-17 at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, Nov. 18, at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door for adults, $8 for students and seniors. Tickets can be purchased in the Otter Valley library during school hours or at Carr’s Florist and Gift Shop in Brandon. Shows often sell out, advance purchase is recommended.
Because of adult subject matter, this production may not be suitable for children younger than 12.
