Volunteers needed to support children of the military
VERGENNES — Reintegration after deployment can be stressful for a military family, especially for kids who may experience anxiety and need assistance to cope during what can be a long adjustment period as their lives begin to return to normal at home and school.
On Oct. 29 Vermonters are invited to learn how they can help support military kids in Addison County at a Ready, Set, Go! informational session sponsored by Operation: Military Kids (OMK), a program of University of Vermont Extension 4-H. This meeting will be held at the Bixby Memorial Library, 158 Main St., Vergennes, from 6 to 7 p.m.
Ready, Set, Go! is designed to help community members understand the realities of all phases of the deployment, especially reintegration, and its impact on local families, particularly kids, and provides a framework to build community support networks. At the session, participants will hear about programs OMK has to offer Addison County military youths, including school vacation camps, hero packs and the Mobile Technology Lab. They also will learn about different ways they can become involved either as a volunteer for one-time events or as part of a community team to support local military families.
Contact Jahnine Spaulding, OMK AmeriCorps VISTA member, at (802) 656-2073 by Oct. 26 to register. If requiring a disability-related accommodation to participate, call by Oct. 19.
Vermont OMK partners with community organizations throughout the state to provide activities and support for 4,000 military kids. It operates in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National 4-H program and U.S. Army Child, Youth and School Services.
