VERGENNES — Vergennes police recently investigated two alleged assaults at Northlands Job Corps and one at Vergennes Union High School, and charges followed the two Northlands investigations.
On Sept. 24, police arrested Andre Brown, 18, of New Haven, Conn., for simple assault and lodged him at the Chittenden County Correctional Center. Police allege that Brown punched a fellow student several times in the face after the other student refused to submit to a search that Brown wanted to conduct because someone had stolen money from him.
On Sept. 29, Vergennes police cited Tahjon A. Thomas, 16, of Manchester, N.H., for aggravated assault. Police allege that Thomas was involved in an argument with another student at a pool table and threw two pool balls at the student. Both missed, but the second ball struck a third student in the back of the head hard enough to require stitches.
On Sept. 25 police began investigating an incident in which one VUHS student allegedly assaulted another; police said the assailant believed his victim had made insulting remarks about him. That incident remains under investigation, they said.
In other incidents between Sept. 24 and 30, Vergennes police:
•  On Sept. 24 went to Addison to help a mother who had accidentally locked a child in her car with the vehicle running; police helped her gain entry to the car.
•  On Sept. 24 found a syringe on the ground behind a Main Street apartment building.
•  On Sept. 24 were told a wallet had been lost somewhere between Shaw’s Supermarket and Green Street.
•  On Sept. 24 calmed a verbal dispute between students walking on School Street.
•  On Sept. 24 issued a no-trespass order to a 20-year-old Vergennes man police described as homeless; the order was issued on behalf of a city resident who said the man had taken food and was a bad influence on her children.
•  On Sept. 25 were told a car parked in a Main Street business lot had been gone through, but nothing had been taken.
•  On Sept. 26 cited Nathanael Pegues, 42, of Bridport for refusal to take an evidentiary blood-alcohol test while he was being processed for driving under the influence of alcohol; police stopped him on Monkton Road.
•  On Sept. 26 searched unsuccessfully for a suspicious man seen near Small City Market.
•  On Sept. 26 accepted “bath salts” from a resident that had arrived at her home in the mail; police are still investigating this incident.
•  On Sept. 26 responded to Route 7, where three kids who were target shooting accidentally shot a glass door; city police held the youths until Vermont State Police arrived.
•  On Sept. 27 tried to find a person on South Water Street on behalf of Middlebury police.
•  At the request of VSP stopped a car being erratically driven on Route 7 on Sept. 27; police learned the driver was tired, and told him to pull over and rest.
•  On Sept. 27 dealt with a complaint from a Hillside Acres apartment resident that a neighbor was making threats against her by phone.
•  On Sept. 27 issued no-trespass orders on behalf of a Hillside Acres apartment resident to guests who had stolen food.
•  On Sept. 27 heard from a Ferrisburgh woman that her ex-boyfriend was making threats against her; police gave her advice and also told her to call VSP.
•  On Sept. 28 received a tip about illegal drug activity in the Vergennes area.
•  On Sept. 28 dealt with a minor two-car accident on Main Street.
•  On Sept. 28 arrested Jason O’Reilly, 21, of Vergennes on an outstanding warrant for violation of probation and lodged him at the Chittenden County Correctional Center. Police said he was out on probation for a charge of unlawful restraint.
•  On Sept. 28 were told an inspection sticker had been stolen from a car parked at a Union Street home.
•  On Sept. 29 ran into an employee of Green Mountain Power on Mechanics Street who said he had seen a suspicious person with a crowbar jump into a red Jeep and drive off; police couldn’t find the Jeep.
