VERGENNES — Vergennes police said use of the department’s new license-plate reader on Sept. 20 helped lead to a series of citations, including one for driving under the influence of alcohol, for an Addison man.
Police said they saw a trailer being towed on Green Street with its lights out, and use of the reader showed the owner of the vehicle had a suspended license. Police also alleged the vehicle weaved badly on the road before they stopped it on Main Street.
They then cited the operator, Gary G. Sears, 45, for driving under the influence of alcohol, second offense, alleging his blood-alcohol content tested at 0.187 percent; a criminal count of driving with a suspended license; and violating his conditions of release. The legal BAC level is 0.08 percent.
In other incidents between Sept. 17 and 23, Vergennes police:
•  On Sept. 17 began investigating the theft of a television, sound bar, X-Box and GPS system from an Ice House Court home.
•  On Sept. 17 checked into a possibly suspicious fire in the North and North Maple streets area.
•  On Sept. 17 responded to a minor two-car accident on Monkton Road.
•  On Sept. 19 concluded a two-week investigation by citing Susan Hier, 55, for embezzlement. Police allege she stole and cashed in at least $700 worth of winning lottery tickets from the Addison County Eagles Club on New Haven Road.
•  On Sept. 19 checked into a complaint that a man had violated conditions of his release by posting threats and vulgar material on a woman’s Facebook page.
•  On Sept. 19 directed traffic around a disabled vehicle at the intersection of Monkton Road and Route 7.
•  On Sept. 19 went with the canine unit to help a Colchester police officer conduct a search in Shelburne during which marijuana was found.
•  On Sept. 19 cited Brok Levasseur, 20, of New Haven for unlawful mischief; police alleged he slashed a Jeep’s tire on Monkton Road.
•  On Sept. 20 went with the canine unit to Brandon to help police there conduct a search, during which drugs and a stolen chain saw were found.
•  On Sept. 20 helped the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad on South Maple Street.
•  On Sept. 20 responded to the scene of a one-car accident with injuries on Panton Road in Panton and stood by until Vermont State Police arrived.
•  On Sept. 21 cited a tractor-trailer truck driver for negligent operation after stopping the vehicle for going 62 in a 30 mph zone on West Main Street.
•  On Sept. 21 helped a motorist get into a locked car on Monkton Road.
•  On Sept. 22 went with the canine unit to Bristol to help police there conduct a search, during which drugs and drug paraphernalia were found.
•  On Sept. 22 dealt with a minor two-car accident in the Shaw’s Supermarket parking lot.
•  On Sept. 23 referred a possible sex-assault case to VSP after intervening in a dispute between a man and a woman on Green Street and hearing her complaint about an assault in New Haven.
•  On Sept. 23 looked into a complaint of an individual with a suspended license not returning a borrowed car to a First Street home; as of Monday, police were still seeking the person.
•  On Sept. 23 cited Tanner Church, 24, of Shelburne for larceny for allegedly stealing a handgun from a West Main Street home.
•  On Sept. 23 calmed an arguing couple at a Main Street apartment and recommended family counseling to the woman involved.
•  On Sept. 23 arranged for one juvenile who had damaged a scooter belonging to another to pay for its repair.
•  On Sept. 23 helped VSP deal with a hit-and-run accident on Route 22A in Panton.
