Girl’s soccer: Tigers, Mt. Abe prevail

ADDISON COUNTY — Vergennes avenged an earlier setback to Middlebury to highlight local high school girls’ soccer play on Tuesday. In other action, Mount Abe won at home, but Otter Valley could not defend its home turf.
VUHS OVER MUHS
The Commodores edged the visiting Tigers in overtime, 1-0, turning the tables on MUHS, which had defeated them in OT on the road earlier this season.
Striker Ruby Dombek provided the winning goal. The Commodores blocked a Tiger pass, and it bounced behind the defense. Dombek was first to the ball and went in alone on MUHS goalie Courtney Backus, who did well to make the initial stop, according to Tiger coach Wendy Leeds, but couldn’t maintain possession. Dombek then chipped the game-winner home.
Leeds said both teams played well, especially defensively. Backus finished with eight saves for the 3-4 Tigers, and goalie Caitlin Chaput made nine stops for the 2-4-1 Commodores.
EAGLES
Mount Abe (5-1-1) also avenged a painful loss, defeating Missisquoi, 4-0. The T-Birds upset the Eagles in the first round of the 2011 Division II playoffs.
Evy Jacobs again led the Mount Abe attack, scoring twice. According to Eagle coach Dustin Corrigan, Jacobs has 12 goals and two assists in Mount Abe’s past six games. Chelsea Rublee andMeghan Livingston also continued to find the net for the Eagles, adding a goal apiece, and goalie Ashlie Fay posted a three-save shutout. Two goalies combined for eight saves for the 2-4-1 T-Birds.
OTTERS
Visiting Springfield broke a scoreless tie at OV with 12 minutes to go in the first half and added three more goals before the Otters got on the board on the way to a 5-2 victory.
Lauren Nesshoever scored twice for OV to cut the Cosmos’ lead to 4-2 before the visitors added a goal to clinch the win. Goalie Courtney Poljacik made 12 saves for the 1-5 Otters, and Lauren Bolduc had four stops for the 4-1 Cosmos.
