Vergennes Police Log: City man cited for attacking his mom

VERGENNES — Vergennes police arrested a 34-year-old man on Sept. 6 and charged him with domestic assault after he allegedly attacked his mother at a First Street home that evening.
Charged was Scott Murphy, who police said shares the home with his mother. Police lodged him at the Chittenden County Correctional Center after an incident they alleged began with a dispute over how much Murphy had been drinking.
Police allege that Murphy dragged his mother from one room to another while punching and kicking at her, and kicked her further after he stopped dragging her. Police said they saw a bruise on the victim’s face, but that she refused transportation to Porter Hospital from the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad.
Between Sept. 3 and 9, Vergennes police also responded to five alarms and two 911 calls, conducted seven foot patrols, and:
•  On Sept. 3 calmed an arguing couple at a Hillside Drive apartment.
•  On Sept. 3 calmed a woman at a Green Street home they described as mentally challenged who was acting in a threatening manner toward a caregiver; eventually, the woman was taken to Porter Hospital to meet with Counseling Service of Addison County personnel.

•  On Sept. 4 cited David Garneaux, 32, of Barre for felony driving under the influence, third offense; driving with a suspended license, criminal offense; and possession of marijuana. Police issued the citations after stopping to check on his car, which was pulled over at about 1 a.m. near the intersection of Route 7 and New Haven Road and was partially blocking a traveled lane while he made a phone call. Police alleged his roadside blood-alcohol content tested at 0.184 percent, more than double the legal limit of 0.08.
•  On Sept. 4 aided the Charlotte Rescue Squad at a call on Wing Road in Ferrisburgh.
•  On Sept. 4 cited Northlands Job Corps student Qwaheem Hunter, 21, of Syracuse, N.Y., for simple assault after he allegedly punched a fellow student after a verbal dispute; Hunter was lodged at the Chittenden County Correctional Center.

•  On Sept. 5 on behalf of the state’s attorney’s office served a routine subpoena to a Northlands employee requesting information about an earlier assault case.
•  On Sept. 5 cited Robert Pettinelli, 52, of Williston into court for excessive speed after stopping him for traveling allegedly 68 mph in a 30 mph zone on West Main Street.
•  On Sept. 6 searched unsuccessfully for a youth seen at about 3 a.m. trying to steal a license plate from a vehicle at a Victory Street home.
•  On Sept. 7 cited Sara Stewart, 19, of Hinesburg for marijuana possession after a West Main Street traffic stop.
•  On Sept. 7 told a Green Street man’s ex-wife to stop making harassing phone calls to him, an action taken after he complained.
•  On Sept. 7 responded to a report of an unresponsive male in a car on North Maple Street and discovered a drunken Northlands student on a weekend pass who did not want to return to campus until he sobered up. Police turned the student, who was of legal drinking age, over to Northlands security.
•  On Sept. 8 dealt with two drunken Northlands students on the campus; police ticketed one underage student for the offense and let Northlands security handle the other case because the student was of legal age.
•  On Sept. 8 checked in with a motorist whose car was disabled on West Main Street and were told help was on the way.
•  On Sept. 8 and 9 responded to complaints of youths driving a lawn tractor on sidewalks and in the road on Main Street. Police found no one on the 8th, but on the 9th found the youths and told them to stop.
