Bristol Police Log: Police find hard drugs, needles at Bristol home
BRISTOL — The Bristol Police Department executed a search at a Mountain View Street apartment on Sept. 9, finding 1,500-2,000 used hypodermic needles, heroin, morphine, and a substance that Chief Kevin Gibbs said may possibly be crack cocaine.
Police charged Amy Norton, 38, with possession of heroin and morphine. A second suspect, whose charges are pending while police await test results on the third substance, will likely face charges of possession of crack cocaine.
An officer had responded to a medical assist for an overdose at the same residence the night before. The officer reported seeing drugs in plain sight, and obtained the search warrant.
In addition to the 1,500-2,000 used needles, which police reported had been used at the apartment within the last two months, boxes containing 300 to 400 clean needles were also found.
Nothing indicated that the apartment had been used as a sales hub, Gibbs said.
“There was a lot of stuff in this place,” he said, “but no significant quantities of drugs, no money or records to show sales.”
In other recent activity Bristol police:
• On Aug. 26 received a report of someone firing a gun all day in the landfill. When an officer arrived at the scene to investigate, the shooting had ceased.
• On Aug. 25 discovered that padlocks had been cut from a number of storage lockers on Main Street. Ten to 14 lockers had their locks cut off. Based on the discovery and a later report, police believe that someone cut the locks and returned the following Monday to steal items from the lockers. The police have two suspects in mind. The case is still pending.
• On Aug. 29 responded to a 911 hang-up call. A six-year-old child had used the number in an effort to contact her mother.
• On Aug. 30 charged Shannan LaPlant, 33, with criminal driving with a suspended license, known by police as DLS, for the second time in two days, after LaPlant went to the garage where her confiscated vehicle was being held and retrieved it. LaPlant had been arrested and charged with her first criminal DLS on Aug. 29, after she was observed driving while under criminal suspension.
• On Aug. 30 an officer attended a neighborhood watch meeting at Living Well Residential Care.
• At 4 a.m. on the morning of Sept. 2 responded to crash on Main Street. Police cited Patrick McCarthy, 20, of Ferrisburgh into court to answer a charge of driving under the influence (DUI), possession of marijuana and possession of the drug ecstasy. Police said McCarthy’s car had hit a flowerpot on the sidewalk outside of the National Bank of Middlebury on Main Street, then crashed into a vehicle parked on the street. He was evaluated by rescue workers; he refused treatment.
• On Sept. 2 cited John Lawrence for driving while under suspension, and seized his license plates.
• On Sept. 3 a man strolling down West Street smoking a cigarette noticed a police officer on duty and took off running in the other direction. The officer, along with a state trooper, conducted a search of the area but could not locate the man.
• On Sept. 4 received a report from a West Pleasant Street resident that a gas stove had been stolen from his garage. The resident had set the stove aside to sell it; the man who was buying had arrived while the resident was fishing, and had taken the stove without leaving the agreed-upon payment behind, apparently because he feared it would be stolen. The money had not been received when the resident called police. Gibbs eventually hand-delivered the payment to the complainant.
• On Sept. 5 a woman reported finding a hypodermic needle outside of Champlain Farms, containing an unknown white liquid substance. The needle was picked up and properly disposed of by the police officer.
• On Sept. 6 responded to alarm activation in police headquarters. The door had apparently been left open by an officer, though the alarm was set. The company that checks the building’s fire extinguishers had happened to arrive to perform an inspection before anyone noticed the mistake and activated the alarm.
• On Sept. 6 responded to a complaint that a woman was driving a vehicle with flat tires and no registration. The woman was located; the vehicle was found to be registered, inspected and insured, though the car did have defective equipment and the woman was advised to get it repaired. “I think someone was mad at her,” Gibbs said.
• On Sept. 6 checked a location just outside the village for possible marijuana growth. Nothing was found.
• On Sept. 8 a fire alarm went off in the municipal building; it showed smoke in the hallway. No smoke was found upon arrival. The fire department discovered that there was an electrical problem with the alarm signal.
• On Sept. 9, in what was initially thought to be an untimely death, police conducted a welfare check at a Mountain Street residence. An officer entered the residence and found an elderly female disabled on the floor with blood in her mouth, breathing but very weak. The woman was transported to Porter Hospital.
• On Sept. 10 charged John Lawrence, 44, of Bristol with possession of marijuana. Lawrence had come to the police station to retrieve his license plates, which were seized when Lawrence was issued a citation for driving with a suspended license on Sept. 2. Lawrence arrived at the police station smelling strongly of marijuana. He has two prior convictions for marijuana possession and is scheduled to answer the charge in court on Sept. 24.
