Police chase leads in dog shooting incident

MIDDLEBURY — Police are looking for the assistance from the public to find out who shot a dog off Airport Road in East Middlebury last Monday night.
Middlebury police received a report that Michael Breitigan was walking his dog at around 7:15 p.m. on Sept. 3 when a shot from a rifle came through the trees and struck his four-year-old Rottweiler, Bobo.
The bullet went through part of the animal’s cheek, neck and into his shoulder. Robin Jackson, mother of the dog’s other owner Ashley Whitney Jackson, took Bobo to a local veterinarian, where he was stabilized, then raced the wounded dog to a veterinary clinic in Burlington for critical care.
The dog was released to home care, and Jackson said on Friday he was resting in bed, had to be fed soft food every three or four hours and was under pain medication. Doctors told her that the dog was lucky that the bullet didn’t hit any main arteries. but they could not remove the bullet immediately. They hope the dog will be stable enough in a few weeks to undergo the surgery required to remove the slug.
Jackson was outraged by the danger that some thoughtless person with a gun had put the dog and people in danger. All the land in the area is posted with no-hunting signs, she said.
“It could’ve been a young child out there,” Jackson said. The shooter “needs to be taught a lesson. You don’t shoot into where people live; you don’t shoot onto posted land; you take responsibility for your decisions.”
Middlebury Police Officer Scott Fisher said the incident is under investigation. By Friday afternoon he had talked with several people in the area, but he hoped more would come forward.
He urged anyone with information to call the Middlebury Police Department at 388-3191.
“I’d love to chat with anyone who might have some information,” Fisher said.
