ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police “followed the Subway” to a Bristol resident they have charged with burglary in connection with an Aug. 1 break-in at the Lincoln General Store.
Police on Monday, Aug. 27, cited Josh Mayo, 21, for burglary for allegedly breaking into the Lincoln store through a side window. Once inside, authorities allege he stole around $305 in cash and $330 in cigarettes.
Police allege that before Mayo broke the window, he tried unsuccessfully to force open a side door at the store. He also tried to slip the lock using a Subway Restaurant card, according to police. It was during this failed attempt that police said Mayo’s card slipped through the door. He failed to recover the card before making his escape, police said.
But police found the card at the scene and tracked its serial number to a Jiffy Mart (with Subway) in Hinesburg. Police, in cooperation with Jiffy Mart owners, found video showing Mayo using the card, according to police.
Lincoln General Store owner Vaneasa Stearns positively identified Mayo (apparently a former customer) on the video, according to police, who took him into custody. Mayo is scheduled to be arraigned on the burglary charge in Addison County Superior Court, criminal division, on Sept. 24.
Multiple VSP patrols have been conducted in the Bristol and Lincoln areas in the past few weeks to curb this type of criminal behavior. In other recent activity, VSP:
•  On Aug. 21 at 10 a.m. received a report of a daytime burglary at a Market Road home in Bridport. The victim returned home to discover that someone had entered through an unlocked garage door. It appears to the victim that nothing was stolen at the time of this incident. Police are asking the public to contact them with any information related to this incident.
•  On Aug. 21 at 2 p.m. responded to a two-truck crash on Route 7 in Ferrisburgh. Police said that William Walsh, 66, of Niagara Falls, N.Y., was driving a 2011 Freight Liner tractor-trailer southbound on Route 7 when he met a northbound 2006 Peterbilt tractor-trailer pulling a mobile home and driven by Wayne Tanner, 52, of Lyndonville. The truck pulling the mobile home was escorted by two Caledonia Sheriff’s Department cruisers and two certified escort vehicles, all with emergency lights activated.
Police said Walsh failed to yield for emergency vehicles and it collided with the Peterbilt on a narrow bridge. The trailer on Walsh’s vehicle was torn open and the mobile home sustained damage. Police issued Walsh a ticket for failure to yield to emergency vehicles.
•  On Aug. 21 at 11 p.m. responded to a report of suspicious activity at a home on Hunt Road in New Haven, where a mailbox was vandalized by fire crackers.
•  On Aug. 21 stopped a car driven by Randall Quesnel Jr., 30, of Ferrisburgh on Route 7 in New Haven for a defective passenger side tail light. Police cited Quesnel for driving with a criminally suspended license.
•  On Aug. 22 at 5:45 p.m. cited Danielle Rene Austin, 34, of Salisbury for unlawful mischief for allegedly vandalizing a Dodge Caravan parked on Lower Notch Road in Bristol on Aug. 5.
•  On Aug. 22 were called to investigate a burglary of a storage shed on Vaughn Court in Monkton and the theft of fishing equipment. The suspect used a metal bar and pitchfork to pry open a panel to gain access to the interior of the shed out of view of the victim’s residence, police report. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact VSP.
•  On Aug. 22 at approximately 9 p.m. stopped Dwayne L. Vukoder, 26, of Bristol for speeding on Route 116 in Starksboro. The trooper cited Vukoder for a criminal count of driving with a suspended license.
•  On Aug. 23 at approximately 10:42 p.m. responded, with the assistance of Vergennes police, to a report of a vehicle off Jersey Street in Ferrisburgh. During the investigation state police noted that the driver, 41-year-old Stacy Ann Paquin of Panton, showed signs that she may have been drinking. After she was released from the hospital, police cited Paquin for driving under the influence, second offense, test refusal.
•  On Aug. 24 began investigating a burglary that occurred that day between 8:15 a.m. and 5:15 p.m. at a home on Route 17 East in Addison. The assailant allegedly stole a black safe containing personal documents and a $50 U.S. savings bond. Anyone with information is asked to contact VSP.
•  On Aug. 27 began investigating a burglary of a Lincoln home that day between 8:30 a.m. and 8:12 p.m. The suspects forced entry into the residence and stole jewelry and medication, police report. The victim returned home and discovered the burglary and immediately left the residence and called the state police. Anyone with information is asked to contact VSP.
