Vergennes Police Log: House guests cited for grand larceny

VERGENNES — Vergennes police on Aug. 18 cited a man and a woman who were houseguests at a Hillside Drive apartment on Aug. 11 and 12 for grand larceny after they allegedly stole electronics equipment, jewelry and movies from their absentee hosts.
Charged were Derrick St. George, 26, of Charlotte and Stephanie Williams, 21, of New Haven. Vergennes Police Chief George Merkel said the citations were issued after an investigation and interview conducted by Detective Jason Ouellette. Police allege that St. George also ransacked the apartment to make it appear as if burglars had taken the items rather than he and Williams.
Police allege that St. George and Williams pawned the stolen goods, and police are hopeful the apartment residents can get their belongings back.
In other action between Aug. 13 and 19, Vergennes police:
•  On Aug. 13 went to Panton Road in Panton at the request of that town’s highway department because motorists were not respecting temporary traffic signals at a road project; police said they stayed for a while to observe.
•  On Aug. 13 went to a South Maple Street home to look into a report of a small fire in its back yard that a real estate agent had put out; police determined that a family member had started the fire and burned personal belongings.
•  On Aug. 13 went to Northlands Job Corps after receiving an anonymous tip of a fight there; police said Northlands security had separated two students who had come to blows over complaints about late-night noise in a dorm hall, but that the situation was still tense and that one witness said that other students had become involved and had to be taken away from the scene. Police said they still heard yelling outside when they interviewed the two students involved. No charges were filed, but police said Northlands disciplined the pair. In all, four city officers responded.
•  At about 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 13 told four juvenile skateboarders on MacDonough Drive to stop.
•  On Aug. 14 helped a motorist get into a locked car on Monkton Road.
•  On Aug. 14 picked up a loose dog near the city pool and took it to the Vergennes Animal Hospital.
•  On Aug. 14 looked into an allegation that one resident at a home owned by the John Graham Shelter had slammed a door into the back of another resident, but were unable to verify the claim.
•  On Aug. 15 asked a New York sheriff’s department to check the welfare of a woman who was claiming to someone in Vergennes she was being held against her will; it was determined that was not the case.
•  On Aug. 15 heard from a MacDonough Drive resident that juveniles walking along the river had damaged some of his property and left behind drug paraphernalia; the resident asked for increased patrols.
•  On Aug. 15 arrested Jessica Popp, 25, of Monkton on an outstanding warrant from Chittenden County court and lodged her at the Chittenden County Correctional Center.
•  On Aug. 16 handled a minor two-car accident on South Water Street.
•  On Aug. 17 checked the welfare of a woman living near People’s United Bank at the request of a bank employee; she was found to be OK.
•  On Aug. 17 heard from a man that he was receiving threatening phone messages from a man and a woman; police determined all three were at fault and told them to steer clear of one another.
•  On Aug. 19 helped Vermont State Police by looking into a motorist filling up with gas at the Panton General Store and leaving without paying, but could not find the vehicle.
•  On Aug. 19 aided VSP by looking into a complaint of a license plate theft from Fort Cassin Road in Ferrisburgh.
