ADDISON COUNTY — A New Jersey man died after falling from the deck of a Lake Dunmore Road home in Salisbury on Wednesday, Aug. 8.
Vermont State Police said Gerard K. Conroy, 50, of Bradley Branch, N.J., was visiting family members on Lake Dunmore when he fell from the deck of the home, dropping around 12 feet to the ground below. The ground consisted of brush and rock, and Conroy suffered a head injury as a result of the fall, according to police. Conroy was found unresponsive.
He was taken by the Middlebury Volunteer Ambulance Association to Porter Hospital, where he died from his injuries, police said. No foul play is suspected, though alcohol might have been a factor, according to authorities. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the cause of death.
In other recent activity, VSP troopers:
•  On Aug. 4 at 6:29 p.m. received a report of a burglary at an Old Hollow Road residence in Ferrisburgh. The victim told police that several items were stolen from the residence including recyclables and gasoline. Police said they determined that Shayne Thompson, 57, of Lincoln had entered the residence and taken the property, and they arrested her at her Lincoln home and cited her for burglary and violation of her conditions of release.
•  On Aug. 6 at 7 a.m. responded to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Crown Point and Happy Valley roads in Bridport. Police investigation determined that Noel Hines, 55, of Shoreham was driving a former school bus southbound on Crown Point Road when the bus crossed into the northbound lane and collided with the northbound Audi station wagon driven by Ann Tomlinson-Torrey, 53, of Bridport. Tomlinson-Torrey sustained facial lacerations and a passenger in her car sustained a back injury. Both vehicles were towed away due to disabling damage. Police gave Hines a ticket for failure to drive to the right.
•  On Aug. 6 at approximately 7:37 a.m. were notified of multiple mailbox vandalisms that occurred on Lime Kiln Road in Monkton and New Haven. These acts were suspected of happening sometime between 2 p.m. on Aug. 5 and 7:30 a.m. on Aug. 6. •  On Aug. 7 responded to a report of a burglary sometime between 3:30 and 7:30 p.m. that day at a Dragon Brook Road residence in Ripton. Investigation revealed that the burglar gained entry through the front door of the residence. A wooden desk containing art materials, a printer and a laundry basket were taken from the residence. •  On Aug. 7 at approximately 7:25 p.m. responded to Halpin Road in New Haven for a report of an ongoing domestic dispute. Police subsequently cited Landon Urban, 25, of New Haven for aggravated domestic assault after a physical altercation with a domestic partner. He was lodged at the  Marble Valley Correctional Facility with bail set at $25,000.
•  On Aug. 8 at 9:35 a.m., after receiving a tip on a wanted person, located that individual at Addison County Fair and Field Days. Troopers arrested Amanda Gilbert, 32, of Moriah, N.Y., without incident and transported her to the New Haven VSP barracks for booking and then to the Addison County Sheriff’s Department to post bail. Senior Trooper Justin Busby said Gilbert was wanted for writing bad checks and cited for same and was released with a court date.
•  On Aug. 8 were called to investigate a burglary from an outbuilding on Sand Road in Ferrisburgh. The burglary occurred between July 24 and Aug. 8. Stolen from the building was a kit motorcycle with a 110CC Zeochen engine, SDG frame and Star Cross tires. The fenders are faded red in color and the word “Zeochen” appears on the engine. •  On Aug. 9 were called to investigate a burglary of a Hawkins Road home in Ferrisburgh. This forced-entry burglary occurred between 7 a.m. and 6:15 p.m. that day. Multiple items of costume and low-end jewelry were reported stolen as well as a bottle of prescription medicine. Also stolen was approximately $500 in U.S. currency that was in a lock box. Anyone with information relevant to this incident is encouraged to call the state police.
•  On Aug. 9 were called to investigate a burglary at a private camp on County Road in Lincoln. Forced entry was made and property reported stolen included fishing poles, a game camera and liquor. •  On Aug. 9 at 4:20 p.m. responded to a two-vehicle accident on Route 17 in Addison. Police said Kyle Birchmore, 20, of Addison was just about to turn the 2001 Chevrolet truck he was driving into the DAR State Park when a 2011 Ford Fusion driven by Paul Guider, 52, of Chatham, N.J., hit him from behind. The truck sustained damage to the front bumper and hood. The Fusion was totaled. Both drivers were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash. Birchmore was uninjured while Guider was transported to Porter Hospital, where he was treated for bruising to his left leg, back and temple and then released.
•  On Aug. 9 at 9:25 p.m. stopped a motor vehicle driven by Nathan Lougee, 23, of Burlington on Route 30 in Cornwall for allegedly traveling at 85 mph in a 50 mph zone. Police cited him for speeding and for driving under the influence.
•  On Aug. 9 at approximately 9:38 p.m. responded to a one-car crash with injuries on Quaker Village Road in Weybridge. The trooper reported that, based on the facts and observations she made, Charles Baumgartner, 67, of Middlebury was driving a Chevrolet Impala too fast for road conditions on the rainy night and lost control of the vehicle and struck a tree. Baumgartner and a passenger were transported to Porter Hospital.
•  On Aug. 10 at 6:10 p.m. arrested Steven Fifield, 51, of Bristol for possession of marijuana plants. This arrest was a result of a short investigation into an incident that occurred on Aug. 4 at Fifield’s residence.
•  On Aug. 10 received a report that a six-foot-tall man with long, wavy, black hair down past his shoulders had stolen 5.892 gallons of fuel from the Short Stop Convenience Store on Route 7 in Ferrisburgh at 6:50 p.m. that day. The suspect was last seen wearing a red, long-sleeve shirt with the sleeves rolled up and operating a newer red SUV.
•  On Aug. 10 at approximately 7:37 p.m. responded to a one-car crash with injuries on Sand Road in Ferrisburgh. Police report that Melissa L. Swanson, 40, of Ferrisburgh totaled the 2001 Nissan Maxima she was driving and both she and her passenger were transported to Porter Hospital. Swanson was subsequently taken into custody and cited for driving under the influence.
•  On Aug. 11 at 10:30 a.m. cited Samantha A. Gill, 34, of Bristol for petty larceny. Over the past four months VSP have been working with the Addison County State’s Attorney’s office on an investigation of thefts at the Bristol Country Store. Through investigation police said they found that Gill, a former employee, allegedly stole lottery tickets and cash while she worked at the store.
•  On Aug. 11 at 6:30 p.m. responded to a report of an ongoing argument between a male and female subject followed by a gunshot at a Balsam Drive home in Leicester. Police said their investigation showed that Chad Jerome, 21, of Bristol and a 17-year-old female were arguing about a dog that was not allowed in the residence and a round was fired into the ground. Both were cited into Addison County Court to answer to the charges of disorderly conduct.
•  On Aug. 11 at one minute before 10 p.m., while conducting traffic enforcement at the intersection of Routes 22A and 17 in Addison, stopped a silver van after the trooper observed the northbound vehicle traveling with only its parking lights illuminated. During the traffic stop, police determined that the driver, Amanda Chamberlain, 44, of Addison, was impaired. The trooper cited her for driving under the influence.
•  On Aug. 12 at 11:30 a.m. were told about the theft of a wallet from a vehicle at a music festival located on Ireland Road in Bristol. The wallet was reported to have contained $500-$700 and was taken between 11 p.m. on Aug. 11 and 2 a.m. on Aug. 12. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the VSP.
•  On Aug. 12 at approximately 5:34 p.m. received a complaint that someone drove away from the Maplefields on Route 7 in New Haven without paying for $40 in gasoline. The vehicle was a darker color, full-size pickup truck pulling a Gator ATV behind it. Anyone with information is asked to contact the VSP.
