Orwell school begins search for new leader

ORWELL — The Orwell Village School Board earlier this month decided to begin the search for a new principal, releasing current Principal Susan DeCarolis from her current contract.
The decision marks the end of DeCarolis’s seven-year tenure as principal in Orwell, but she won’t be going far — Addison Rutland Supervisory Union Superintendent Ron Ryan said she’ll be taking an ARSU literacy and math specialist position. In that job she’ll be working with teachers and students in the classroom. She’ll be starting that position once a new principal is in place, with the aim of finding someone for the position by Oct. 1.
ARSU tapped DeCarolis to fill the literacy and math specialist position because of her prior experience as a curriculum coordinator in the Rutland South Supervisory Union.
“She has a lot of expertise in the curriculum area,” Ryan said.
DeCarolis said her time in Orwell had been good.
“I’m definitely going to miss Orwell, but I’m definitely excited about the new position,” she said last week.
Ryan said despite the announcement of the position less than a month before the start of school — classes start Aug. 29 — there have already been several promising applicants for the position, and he expects more to come in over the next couple of weeks.
“I believe we’ll have some good candidates,” he said.
