VERGENNES — The Vergennes Police Department canine twice recently alerted on the presence of drugs in vehicles, and citations were issued as a result, Vergennes police said.
On July 30 in Vergennes police saw a car being fueled at a city gas station by a man they said they knew had a suspended license. Police said the operator and a passenger seemed impaired, and they obtained permission to search the car after the dog alerted on it.
Police allege they found a small amount of marijuana and paraphernalia, and cited the driver, Derrick Cusson-St. George, 26, of Charlotte for driving with a suspended license and issued him a city ticket for paraphernalia. They also cited a passenger, Mark Kennedy, 25, of Vergennes, for marijuana possession and ticketed him for paraphernalia possession.
On Aug. 2 Bristol police called the Vergennes police Drug Recognition Expert to evaluate a driver involved with an accident at the intersection of Routes 116 and 17. A separate unit with the dog also responded, as did a Middlebury unit. Vergennes police said a small amount of heroin was found after the dog alerted on the car and permission to search was given, and Bristol police took a suspect into custody.
In other action between July 30 and Aug. 5, Vergennes police:
•  On July 30 received a tip about illegal drug activity in the area.
•  On July 30 returned a wallet to its owner after receiving it from the Monkton Road store in which it was left.
•  On July 30 were told a bad check was passed at American Legion Post 14, a matter that remains under investigation.
•  On July 31 issued a ticket to a Route 7 motorist for going 75 in a 50 mph zone.
•  On July 31 helped Vermont State Police calm a female teen carrying a knife at a South Middlebrook Road, Ferrisburgh, home.
•  On Aug. 1 aided the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad at a Panton Road medical call.
•  On Aug. 1 calmed a family dispute at a Middlebrook Road home in Ferrisburgh until VSP arrived.
•  On Aug. 1 responded to a complaint of a noisy crowd at the Brown McClay Funeral Home, but found no problem.
•  On Aug. 2 went to the City Limits tavern after a report of a man trying to start fights there, and learned he had gotten a ride home with a sober friend.
•  On Aug. 2 cited Joseph Kudjoe, 44, of Worcester, Mass., for driving under the influence of alcohol. Police stopped his car for driving 44 in a 30 mph West Main Street zone and allege his blood alcohol content tested at 0.083 percent at the police station. The legal limit for driving is 0.08 percent.
•  On Aug. 3 were told that two power sanders and an air mattress had been stolen from a West Main Street garage.
•  On Aug. 3 asked other agencies to look out for a John Graham Shelter resident who had left unexpectedly with her belongings; shelter employees were concerned about her welfare.
•  On Aug. 3 were told a bike had been stolen from a Hillside Drive apartment porch; police said the bike was returned, but they are still looking into the circumstances.
•  On Aug. 3 warned a man to stop making harassing phone calls to a city woman.
•  On Aug. 3 were told an iPod had been stolen from the John Graham Shelter.
•  On Aug. 3 returned a wallet to its owner after receiving it from the Main Street store at which it was left nearby.
•  On Aug. 4 looked into a case in which an older man allegedly followed a young woman around town.
•  On Aug. 4 helped VSP by directing traffic around a two-car accident at the intersection of Routes 7 and 22A.
•  On Aug. 4 and 5 helped motorists get into their locked cars on South Maple and Main streets, respectively.
•  On Aug. 5 accepted a marijuana pipe that was found on First Street.
•  On Aug. 5 were told parts of a bike had been stolen from a South Maple Street property.
•  On Aug. 5 handled a complaint that a woman’s ex-boyfriend was harassing her and threatening to damage her current boyfriend’s motorcycle.
