MIDDLEBURY — New venues continue to join the Middlebury Arts Walk as the season continues. Galerie Provenance, a new art gallery located at 1 Frog Hollow Alley (previously occupied by BeJewelled), is the newest addition to the monthly event. Galerie Provenance opened mid-July and specializes in American and French art, antiques and accoutrements.
The pop-up gallery that debuted last month will again feature several artists during the Aug. 10 Arts Walk. Located in the Lazarus Building at 20 Main St., the pop-up gallery will feature pieces from Rachel Baird (paintings), Lily Hinrichsen (prints), Kirsten Hoving (photography), Kate Longmaid (paintings), Daniel Suska (graphic art), Brian Zeigler (drawings, collage, watercolor, mixed media) and Ginger Birdsey (ceramics, collage, paintings), among others.
NEW ARTISTS
The Middlebury Arts Walk makes an effort to keep the art fresh every month by introducing new artists as often as possible. With 35 venues and six event dates, that’s more than 200 different artists throughout the season. This month features several first-time Arts Walk participants:
•  Suzanne Calhoun, photography, 51 Main at the Bridge
•  Milk and Honey Quilters, multiple quilts, Middlebury Community House
•  Sadie Meakin, fabric art, also at the Middlebury Community House
•  Paul Forlenza, photography, Vermont Integrated Architecture (Marble Works)
•  Dan Brett, pen-and-ink illustrations, and Mirjam Brett, photography; both at Kumon Math and Reading Center (Frog Hollow Alley)
•  Brian Zeigler; drawings, collage, watercolor, mixed media; pop-up gallery at 20 Main St.
•  Kate Longmaid, still lifes, pop-up gallery at 20 Main St.
VERMONT ARTS COUNCIL GRANT
The organizing committee for the Middlebury Arts Walk was excited to learn this week that it has been awarded a Project Grant by the Vermont Arts Council (VAC) for fiscal year 2013. “We’ve never applied for a VAC grant before and we’re overjoyed that we were awarded a grant on our first try,” said Nancy Slater Cobden, committee member. With the grant, Middlebury Arts Walk will be able to promote the event beyond Addison County region in an effort to attract attendees from around the state.
The grant requires a one-to-one cash match, so the committee will be seeking financial support from local businesses and individuals. The Middlebury Arts Walk does not charge attendees, venues or artists to participate. Its sole source of funding is advertising space sold in the monthly flyer.
ABOUT THE ARTS WALK
Now in its fourth season, Middlebury Arts Walk takes place on the second Friday of the month, May through October, from 5 to 7 p.m. In many cases the art is on display all month long — not just on the second Friday. All exhibits are free and Arts Walk is a family-friendly event. Middlebury Arts Walk occupies more than 30 locations each month including artists’ galleries, stores, professional offices and museums. In addition, musicians perform in the town’s outdoor parks whenever possible and weather permitting. The range of work on view includes paintings, photography, performances and crafts.
