Update: Three-vehicle crash in Shoreham
SHOREHAM — Two adults sustained injuries — one requiring airlift transport to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. — but an infant was miraculously unhurt in a severe three-car crash on Route 74 in Shoreham on Thursday.
Vermont State Police responded to the crash at around 8:30 a.m. on Route 74 in eastern Shoreham, near Tottingham Road.
Their investigation revealed that a Toyota Corolla driven by Mark Thomas, 43, of Bristol was traveling westbound on Route 74 when it drifted across the centerline and struck and eastbound, boulder-laden dumptruck being driven by John Seeley, 44, of Middlebury.
Police said Seeley lost control of his truck, which careened into the westbound lane and rolled onto the front end of a Dodge Caravan minivan being driven by Michele Almeida, 37, of Orwell.
Police said Almeida sustained “moderate” injuries and was airlifted to Dartmouth-Hitchcock by a medevac helicopter that was on standby on the Shoreham town green while rescue officials tended to the injured.
Thomas sustained moderate injuries and was transported to Porter Hospital in Middlebury and later to Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, according to police. Seeley was uninjured, as was a two-month-old infant riding in Thomas’s car, police said.
Rescue officials used the Jaws of Life to extricate some of the victims including a child.
State police cited Thomas for driving with a suspended license and for failure to drive to the right.
Volunteer Fire Departments from Shoreham, Orwell and Bridport responded to the scene as well as ambulances from Middlebury Volunteer Ambulance Association and Vergennes Area Rescue Squad.
