MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police assisted a local man who was the target of a phone scam on May 30. Police said the man was told that he had won a Mercedes and $700,000 and all he had to do was send in a $500 money order to claim the prizes.
Authorities are again warning people not to share their private financial information with others promising something too good to be true.
In other action last week, Middlebury police:
•  Assisted Middlebury Volunteer Ambulance Association officials in getting to a woman who had passed out at the side of the Otter Creek near Three Mile Bridge on May 28. Police said they measured the woman’s blood-alcohol content at 0.238 percent. (As a point of comparison, the legal limit for driving is 0.08 percent.) Police said a parent eventually took custody of the woman.
•  Cited Skyler L. Browder, 22, of Salisbury for unlawful trespass at the Hannaford Supermarket at The Centre shopping plaza on May 28.
•  Were informed of a drive-off involving $25 in fuel at the Middlebury Village Depot on Court Street on May 28.
•  Served a no-trespass order on May 28 on a local woman no longer wanted on Middlebury Inn property.
•  Responded to reports of someone screaming in the vicinity of the Marble Works complex off Maple Street on May 29. Police said they found a very drunk man staggering along the footbridge. Police said they measured the man’s blood-alcohol content at 0.303 percent.
•  Were informed that someone had stolen a Raleigh 10-speed bike from a Morningside Drive residence on May 29.
•  Investigated a domestic dispute between a man and a woman off Route 7 South between McDonald’s restaurant and Rosie’s Restaurant. Police said the couple had been arguing.
•  Responded to a report of a student stealing things from Middlebury Union Middle School on May 30.
•  Ticketed a Washington Street resident for violating the town’s burn ordinance on May 30. Police said the resident was burning, among other things, furniture, cloth, wires, beer cans and bottles. The fire was also was not in an enclosed pit, according to police.
•  Warned a MUMS student on May 31 about the consequences of threatening another student.
•  Responded to the reported theft of a peach tank top from Mendy’s on Main Street on May 30. Police said they could not find the female suspect.
•  Were informed on May 31 that a woman had stolen a decorative, stuffed animal head from Clementine’s on Main Street.
•  Responded to a dispute between some Cross Street neighbors on May 31.
•  Cited Robert T. Stiles, 41, of Port Henry, N.Y., for retail theft, following an alleged incident at Hannaford Supermarket on May 31. Police said they also cited Stiles for driving with a suspended license.
•  Were informed that someone had slashed the tire of a vehicle parked at Middlebury Union High School on June 1.
•  Responded to domestic disputes at residences on a Seminary Street and Washington Street Extension on June 3.
