Vermont State Police Log: Agencies help find missing child
ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police and a number of agencies were called to Leicester on May 11 to search for a five-year-old missing on a hike near Silver Lake.
At approximately 4:05 p.m. last Friday VSP were notified of a missing 5-year-old boy who had been on a hiking excursion with his mother and six or seven friends and other family members. The boy was separated from the rest of the party at the top of the Silver Lake trail near the lake and dam area. At the time of the call to police, he had been missing for approximately one hour and none of the hiking party could locate him.
Troopers responded as well as members of the Salisbury Fire Department, Middlebury Fire Department/Technical Rescue Team, Brandon Rescue Squad, Middlebury Rescue Squad, U.S. Forest Service, and Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department. K-9 teams were also called in from Vergennes and Shelburne police departments.
First responders set up a command post at the Silver Lake/Falls of Lana parking access off Route 53.
A family member and first responder found the boy about 45 minutes to an hour after the initial call to authorities. Police said the young boy was tired but did not require medical attention.
In other recent activity, VSP:
• On May 7 at just before 8 a.m. responded to a two-car crash on Route 17 near the West Addison General Store. Police said Jessica Cheney, 18, of Ticonderoga, N.Y., was driving an older Chevrolet Venture minivan when she turned in front of a newer Ford Taurus sedan driven by Jeffery Freegard, 29 of Vergennes. The vehicles collided in the eastbound lane and both sustained massive front-end damage. The Vergennes Area Rescue Squad took both drivers to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The Addison Fire Department helped VSP on the scene. Cheney will be mailed two traffic tickets for violations that troopers said caused the crash.
• On the morning of May 9 were called to Kampersville in Salisbury to investigate the theft of property from a camper and the subsequent vandalism to a recreational vehicle at the camp. Two propane tanks valued at $300 were reported stolen and two of the RV doors were damaged by someone attempting to force entry. The value of the vandalized doors is approximately $1,000. • On May 11 were called to a home in the Market Road neighborhood in Bridport for a report of a burglary that had taken place the previous day. The homeowner reported that several guitars and musical equipment were missing from the residence. Anyone with information is asked to contact Trooper Armstrong in New Haven at 802-388-4919.
• On May 12 at 11:14 p.m. stopped a motor vehicle driven by Jeremiah Cole, 18, of Leicester on Route 7 in Leicester for defective equipment and ended up citing Cole and a passenger, 19-year-old Jonathan Lanpher of Leicester, with possession of a misdemeanor amount of marijuana and possession of alcohol by a minor.
• On May 13 at 5:45 a.m. responded to a report of a domestic assault on North Street in New Haven. Investigation led the trooper to take Brendon Carper, 23, of Lincoln into custody and cite him for domestic assault.
• On May 14 at 7:20 a.m. responded to a one-vehicle crash in Salisbury. Police said Mark Mahoney, 27, of Brandon was driving a 2004 Chevrolet S-10 truck northbound on West Shore Road when he apparently fell asleep and travelled off the west side of the road and collided with trees. Mahoney was not injured, but the truck sustained damage to its front end, left and right front fenders, and hood.
• On May 14 at 5 p.m. responded to a two-vehicle collision on Stoney Hill at Lovers Lane in Bristol. Police said investigation revealed that said the two vehicles involved were a truck driven by George Whitcomb, 43, of Bristol and a passenger car driven by Timothy Humphrey, 29, of Charlotte. The trooper said the weather was clear and sunny and the pavement was dry, and she did not provide details on how the crash came about. Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts and did not sustain injury.
Vermont State Police is urging urge drivers to be cautious of their surroundings, especially as the summer weather arrives and motorists begin to share the roads with pedestrians, motorcycles and bicyclists.
