BRISTOL — Bristol police on May 11 arrested and lodged a Bristol man for allegedly violating his conditions of release.
Police Chief Kevin Gibbs said Whalen Goucher, 43, was previously arrested for stalking a local woman and had posted $10,000 bail on May 9. Gibbs alleged that Goucher lied on his bail bond application, saying he had no criminal record when he had an extensive record in Massachusetts, including armed robbery.
But that wasn’t the reason police pursued Goucher. The Bristol police were aware of Goucher’s release and arrested him when he failed to notify the court of his whereabouts, as was a required condition of his release. Goucher was further charged with obstructing justice when he threatened the arresting officer, said Gibbs.
In other recent activity Bristol police:
•  On May 7 assisted state police with a crash on York Hill Road in Lincoln, where the subject reportedly crashed into a tree and then took off into the woods with a female companion. State police identified the owner as Ernest Cushman of Bristol. A Bristol police officer went to his home and didn’t find him there. The officer returned to the scene at the request of the state police, who observed Cushman running through the woods. He was located and charged with leaving the scene of the accident. Gibbs explained that a driver involved in a crash is legally required to identify himself or herself at the scene of the crash.
•  On May 9 responded to a report at Mount Abraham Union High School of a possible suicidal teen. The teen was found behind the school at 6:12 p.m. with some cuts on his wrist. The parent was called to the scene and the teen was released to his parents. The Department of Children and Families (DCF) was notified of the incident.
•  On May 9 dealt with a dispute at an East Street apartment building where one resident was banging on the floor and the other was banging on the ceiling. Police told the neighbors to contact their landlord.
•  On May 10 at 4:30 a.m. executed a search warrant for the arrest of Carroll Thompson, who went missing in 2003 after being arraigned for stealing a Bristol police cruiser while intoxicated. •  On May 10 received a report of a landlord trespassing in a tenant’s space. The tenant was moving out and the landlord went into the dwelling. The landlord told the tenant what she expected from him in terms of cleaning. No charges were issued.
•  On May 11 checked the welfare of a juvenile who made threats to harm herself.
•  On May 11 received a report of the theft of an Apple computer from a High Street home between noon and 1:45 p.m. The estimated value of the device is upwards of $1,900. Nothing else appears to have been taken from the home. No suspects have been identified.
•  On May 12 received a 911 call from Main Street, but could not locate the caller.
•  On May 12 helped other law enforcement agencies patrol the Mount Abe and Middlebury union high school proms for substance use. No arrests were made that night, but police broke up one party in Bristol at which most in attendance were adults, but a few were underage, Gibbs said. In total, police checked on four parties. Other than the adult party, three were abandoned by the time police arrived.
•  On May 15 received a report of a child taken from a daycare center by a grandparent. The grandparent reported to DCF possible neglect or abuse by the parents and spoke to Gibbs. There didn’t appear to be any immediate threats to the child and the grandparent was advised to return the child to the daycare center.
