BRISTOL — On May 2, the Bristol Police Department received a report of possible drug activity at a North Street residence. Officers followed up and found there was a high level of traffic going in and out of the apartment.
After obtaining a warrant, police on May 3 went into the dwelling of Winthrop Thompson, 46, and say they found marijuana and a collection of pills. They cited Winthrop and Donald Grace, 50, of Bristol — who the police said was living with Winthrop — with possession of marijuana and a regulated drug.
The pills are undergoing lab tests, but Chief Kevin Gibbs surmises that the substance is Valium.
In other news from the past week, Bristol police:
•  On May 1, received a complaint of a fraudulently cashed check. Gibbs said the Bristol complainant allegedly purchased a gas tank from Forand’s Auto Supply on Main Street, and asked a mechanic to install the tank. The complainant then had a change of heart and decided he didn’t want the mechanic to do the work. The mechanic took the tank back to Forand’s, which made a check out to the complainant. The mechanic then allegedly cashed the check under the complainant’s name and took the money. The case is under investigation.
•  On May 2, received a call about a lost wallet at Cubbers Restaurant on Main Street. The police called the owner who recovered the wallet.
•  On May 2, responded to a complaint of an ATV driving around the Mount Abraham Union High School campus. Police located two 17-year-olds on ATVs on Crescent Street and issued numerous traffic tickets for different violations of regulations for ATVs, including driving along a roadway, driving under the age of 18 without having attended a safety course, unregistered ATVs and trespassing with motor vehicles.
•  On May 2, disposed of two syringes found on South Street.
•  On May 2, received a report of person being chased by a full-sized rottweiler on Adirondack View, not far from Bristol Elementary School. The officer spoke to the landlord of the residence who said she had received several complaints about the dog, but police could not locate the dog.
•  On May 3, responded to an injured and sick duck at Bristol Elementary. Students found it on the playground, and it didn’t want to move. Gibbs retrieved the duck and took it to the Shelburne animal hospital, which treats injured water fowl and returns them to the wild. One of the sixth-graders has named the duck Edward.
•  On May 3, responded to an alarm activation at the municipal offices.
•  On May 4, cited Melodie Campbell, 39, of Bristol for driving with a suspended license because she was operating a small, motorized scooter on South Street. She was also ticketed for not having a registered vehicle and not having insurance. Gibbs said she claimed the scooter didn’t need to be registered because the engine size is so small. She said she didn’t need a motorcycle license either.
Gibbs is checking with the Department of Motor Vehicles. The ticket might be negotiable, he said, depending on certain laws; but a valid driver’s license — not motorcycle license — is necessary.
“To operate a scooter in the state of Vermont, you don’t have to have a motorcycle license, but you do need a valid driver’s license,” Gibbs said.
•  On May 5, responded to Elder Hill in Lincoln to assist the Vermont State Police with an alleged underage drinking party. Police found minors gathering, but none of them were drinking.
•  On May 5, made a welfare check on a Bristol man in response to a report that his vehicle was left in front of the Baptist church for several days. The owner was found to be camping in New York and couldn’t be reached, but his roommate had a spare set of keys and moved the car.
•  On May 5, disposed of hypodermic needles found outside Shaw’s supermarket.
•  On May 5, cited Irena Hagan, 34, of Monkton for driving with a suspended license on Prince Lane.
•  On May 5, assisted the Addison County Sheriff’s Department with a drunken driver. A deputy stopped a vehicle on Main Street in New Haven and requested access to the Bristol office for processing.
•  On May 6, assisted the Bristol Rescue Squad on Heath Road with a man experiencing a diabetic emergency.
•  On May 6, responded to a Pleasant Street home to assist a 13-year-old girl with a broken leg. She was taken to Porter Hospital.
•  On May 7, responded to a car crash on River Road, where an officer directed traffic until the state police arrived.
•  On May 7, cited Cassandra Fraser-Brown, 21, of Bristol for possession of marijuana following a traffic stop on West Street.
