ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police stopped a vehicle for traveling at 94 mph in a posted 40 mph zone on Route 7 in New Haven on Easter morning.
Senior Trooper Andrew Leise reported that Bianca Maria Fassbender, 23 of Bad Homburg, Germany, was driving 54 mph over the speed limit through New Haven Junction (where Route 17 and train tracks intersect with Route 7), with three passengers in her vehicle. The trooper noted that this is a busy business area with a major intersection.
Fassbender was booked and flash cited to appear in Addison District Court to answer to the charges of speeding.
Separately, on Saturday, April 7, at a little past 10:30 a.m., troopers responded to a three-car crash on U.S. Route 7 in Waltham in front of the Victory Baptist Church where an Easter egg hunt involving children was taking place.
Police said a 2006 Subaru Impreza driven by Ashley E. Diesi, 25, of Lincoln was stopped in the northbound lane with its turn signal on waiting to turn into the Victory Baptist parking lot when a 2003 Ford Taurus driven by Howard F. Danyew, 42, of Middlesex slowed and moved to the right to pass on the right shoulder of Route 7.
A 2008 Honda CR-V driven by Dina H. Sipley, 69, of New Haven approached from the rear, police said, and Sipley attempted to stop abruptly and swerve but was unsuccessful. The Honda collided with the back of both vehicles, traveled off the east side of Route 7, and came to rest 100 feet off the road in a farmer’s field.
Sipley and Danyew both sustained non-incapacitating bumps and bruises as a result of the collision; Diesi was not injured. No one from the scene was transported to the hospital.
The Honda CR-V and Ford Taurus both sustained severe damage.
VSP were assisted at the scene by the Vergennes Fire Department and Vergennes Area Rescue Squad. Police issued Sipley a civil ticket for following too closely, which carries a penalty of three points on insurance and a $214 fine if convicted.
In other recent activity, VSP:
•  On April 3 responded to Bristol, where, upon arrival, the trooper said she observed Dana Lavallee, 52, of Bristol attempting to drive a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol. Prior to being taken into custody, Lavallee became irate and resisted arrest. Police did take Lavallee into custody and cited him for driving under the influence and resisting arrest.
•  On April 3 at approximately 3 p.m. responded to a two-car crash at 275 Route 116, just east of Bristol village. Preliminary investigation showed that Thomas Gallagher, 64, of Winooski was pulling out of a parking lot on to Route 116 in a 2003 Honda Civic and entered the roadway as Corbin Fox, 17, of Bristol was approaching from the north in a 1998 Ford Escort. The front of Gallagher’s vehicle hit the passenger side of Fox’s vehicle as he passed by causing damage to the front of Gallagher’s car and to the passenger side of Fox’s. Neither operator was injured in the crash.
•  On April 5 at approximately 10:32 a.m. arrested Dennis Rotax, 51, of Lincoln at Shaw’s in Bristol for driving with a criminally suspended license.
•  On April 6 reported that they are investigating a burglary at a private residence in Shoreham. Unknown individual(s) forced entry into a locked Lake Street home, stole a television, and cut approximately 30 feet of copper piping from the basement. The break-in occurred sometime between last Oct. 19 and April 6.
The value of the television and piping is approximately $370. However, because the copper pipe was cut, the basement flooded causing damage and water charges that were estimated to be more than $1,000. The basement was full of water, which had to be pumped out professionally by a plumber. Anyone with information is asked to contact VSP at the New Haven barracks at 802-388-4919.
•  On April 6 at 5:36 p.m. stopped a vehicle owned by Michael Ballard on Murray Road in Whiting. Police found that Ballard, a passenger at the time, was in possession of marijuana. The driver was found to be in possession of a crack pipe. Ballard was processed at the New Haven state police barracks and subsequently released with a citation to appear at the Addison Criminal Division to answer the charge of possession of marijuana.
•  On April 6 at 10:40 p.m. checked a vehicle parked off of Old Jerusalem Road in Leicester. During this encounter, the trooper detected the odor of marijuana and asked the consent of the driver to search the vehicle, but was denied. Police seized the vehicle and applied for a warrant, which was granted by a judge. The trooper reported that during the execution of the warrant he found marijuana, beer, a hacksaw and a stolen street sign in the vehicle.
None of the occupants were 21 years of age. Police cited Dominick Popp, 18, of Leicester and Brandyn Walsh, 19, of Brandon for possession of marijuana and possession of stolen property. The trooper also cited the 17-year-old driver for the same charges. All three were also issued notices for possession of alcohol by a minor.
•  On April 7 at 10:30 p.m. responded to one-car rollover crash on Richville Road, in the area of Shoreham Depot Road in Shoreham. Occupants of the vehicle in question — a silver 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse — were observed leaving the scene soon after in another vehicle. The Eclipse had been traveling westbound on Richville Road and for some reason went off of the westbound shoulder into the front yard of a home, hitting a large tree and causing damage to the property. The vehicle was towed from the scene and is considered totaled. The trooper observed blood at the scene and checked with the hospital but didn’t find any relevant patients. Investigation continues.
•  On April 8 at 2:40 p.m. responded to a pickup truck crash on Downingsville Road in Lincoln. Police said Emily V. Quattrocci, 21, of Lincoln was driving a Dodge Ram southbound on Downingsville Road when she lost control of the vehicle on a slight left curve with loose gravel and ruts. The truck crashed into a steep bank an overturned. The Dodge was totaled, but Quattrocci was uninjured. The trooper issued her a warning for driving too fast for conditions.
