VERGENNES — Vergennes police arrested two Northlands Job Corps students last week in what they said were related drug cases.
On March 5 police cited Daniel R. Jetty, 19, of Northville, N.Y., for possession of marijuana. Police said Jetty had in his possession 27 individually wrapped bags of marijuana, and that he was lodged in the Marble Valley Correctional Center.
On March 6, police cited Christopher Groves, 21, of Plattsburgh, N.Y., for trafficking and conspiracy to sell drugs. Police allege their investigation showed that Groves was “directly involved” in helping Jetty find sources for marijuana; Groves was also lodged.
On March 8, police canines from around Vermont, including the Vergennes unit, searched two Northlands dormitories for drugs and paraphernalia with the permission of Northlands administrators. Vergennes Police Chief George Merkel said the dogs alerted 15 times in the two dormitories, but police found no traces of drugs or paraphernalia. The search was limited to the two dorms, Merkel said.
Also, earlier this month police charged Christopher Provost, 40, of Vergennes with retail theft in a case dating back to October 2011. Police allege that Provost shoplifted antifreeze from a local store.
In other action between March 5 and 11, Vergennes police:
•  On March 5 accepted information about an ongoing domestic assault case.
•  On March 5 cited David Ouellette, 46, of Waltham for a criminal count of driving with a suspended license.
•  On March 5 helped a motorist get into a locked car on Panton Road.
•  On March 5 checked out a report of a suspicious car near a Main Street apartment building and found no problem.
•  On March 6 accepted a tip on illegal drug activity in the area.
•  On March 6 dealt with a complaint from a local parent that his minor daughter was receiving inappropriate cell phone pictures from a Barre teen, also a minor; police called the Barre youth’s parents who apparently have put a stop to the problem.
•  On March 6 met with local school officials to help develop plans to deal with emergency situations.
•  On March 6 took a statement about a possible child abuse case and referred it to the Department of Children and Families.
•  After a March 6 traffic stop on West Main Street cited Stephen M. Roll, 30, of Vergennes for drunk driving and possession of about five grams of marijuana.
•  On March 6 calmed an argument between two teens on Main Street.
•  On March 7 ticketed cars that were in violation of the city wintertime ban on overnight parking on streets.
•  On March 7 cited Northlands student Nicole Colby, 20, for simple assault; police allege Colby placed another female student in a headlock, punched her in the ribs, and pulled her ears.
•  On March 7 went to West Main Street to check a complaint about a suspicious car there and asked its owner to move it.
•  On March 8 helped persuade a woman’s stepson to return to their Main Street home.
•  On March 8 served subpoenas to Hillside Drive and South Maple Street residents on behalf of the Addison County state’s attorney’s office.
•  On March 9 heard three tips about illegal drug activity in the area.
•  On March 9 were told a radio and a pipe wrench had been stolen from a School Street home.
•  On March 9 learned a car parked at Vergennes Union High School had been keyed.
•  On March 9 looked into a complaint that a car had allegedly veered onto a Main Street sidewalk and almost hit a woman and child; police could not find the car, and no one in the area said they saw the incident.
•  On March 10 cited Matthew O. Kaplan for possession of about 4.3 grams of marijuana and for driving 58 mph in a 30 mph zone on West Main Street.
•  On March 10 went to Ferrisburgh Central School on behalf of Vermont State Police and checked a report that a flashlight had been seen inside a school bus; police found nothing amiss.
•  On March 10 went to North Ferrisburgh on behalf of VSP to handle a two-car accident caused when one car swerved to avoid three horses running loose.
•  On March 10 dealt with a loose-dog complaint on Main Street.
•  On March 10 helped a motorist get into a locked car on Main Street.
•  On March 11 handled a three-car accident on Main Street in which one person was taken to Porter Hospital with minor injuries.
•  On March 11 asked a group of hunters on Hopkins Road to stay off private property, at the request of the landowner.
•  On March 11 checked out a complaint that a woman’s ex-husband might be trying to reach her by phone despite a relief-from-abuse order, but determined the calls probably came from telemarketers.
•  On March 11 helped VSP search for hikers in the Bristol Cliffs area. The hikers were found.
