MIDDLEBURY — A Middlebury woman told Middlebury police that last Saturday morning she received a call from a female who said she was with the Kirby vacuum cleaner company, and she was offering a deal on carpet cleaning.
The Middlebury woman made an appointment to have her carpets cleaned later that day, and upon doing so the female asked if she would be home alone. The Middlebury woman responded that she would not be home alone.
Nobody showed up for the appointment and the Middlebury woman said when she called the phone number (802-777-8065), the same female she spoke earlier to answered but said she knew nothing about the vacuum cleaner company.
A police officer called the phone number, which is listed as belonging to a cell phone in the Burlington area, but nobody answered. The officer said the voicemail greeting was that of a younger-sounding female who did not give her name, nor say anything about the Kirby vacuum cleaner company. The officer left a message for the female to call the police department.
The Middlebury woman requested additional patrol in the area and police instructed her to keep her doors locked and a light on outside, and to call immediately if she sees anything suspicious.
In other recent activity, Middlebury police:
•  On March 5 at 12:50 p.m. were told by the Addison County State’s Attorney’s office that the Brattleboro office of the Department of Children and Families had received a text message from a woman who was en route to the Mahady Courthouse in Middlebury and was concerned for her safety and the safety of her child because the man driving was going 100 mph. When the car got to the courthouse parking lot the woman left the area.
At 2:02 p.m. that day, police received a report that the same vehicle was back at the courthouse and the man was seen to be injecting something into his arm. Police cited the man, Ethan B. Newton, 20, of Brattleboro, for possession of a regulated drug.
•  On March 5 at 4:35 p.m. received a report that a black, four-door Volvo, possibly with a red decal on the back, comes down Mill Street at a high rate of speed Monday through Thursday between 3:30 and 4 p.m. There are a couple of people in the vehicle and the caller believed they are in high school because of the time of day and age they appear to be.
•  On March 5 at around 5 p.m. cited Bryan Ashley-Selleck, 43, of Salisbury for a criminal count of driving with a suspended license in the Shaw’s parking lot.
•  On March 5 at 6:41 p.m. received a report from Piper Road near School House Hill from a woman who said her ex-husband and her father got into a fight, and they were both bleeding. The ambulance was called.
•  On March 5 at 9 p.m. received a report from a Court Street resident who had three people he wanted removed who would not leave. Officers went to the home and the remaining holdout left of her own accord.
•  On March 6 at 4:24 a.m. responded to a call for help from a Chipman Hill resident who said her toilet was overflowing and her plumber was in the hospital. When police arrived they found that the overflowing had stopped.
•  On March 6 at 7:12 a.m. responded to a two-car accident, no injuries, near the transfer station on Route 7 South.
•  On March 6 at 8:34 a.m. responded to a three-car accident, no injuries, on Court Street south of the Sunoco Station.
•  Received a report of an iPod Touch stolen from Vermont Sun on March 5 between 1 and 2 p.m.
•  On March 6 at 3:40 p.m. issued a no-trespass notice at Kinney Drugs on Court Street on a male who allegedly took some items from the store and returned them and waited for police when confronted by a store manager.
•  On March 6 at 3:45 p.m. found a two-car accident at the Maplefields on North Pleasant Street, and investigated it.
•  On March 6 at 5 p.m. responded to a caller who reported a barefoot man standing next to a white truck on Merchants Row, possibly parked in the handicap parking and with the truck radio playing loudly. The man told the police officer that he was cooling his feet and would be leaving shortly.
•  On March 6 at 7:15 p.m. helped Vergennes police process a male for DUI and possession of marijuana at the Middlebury police station.
•  On March 7 at 2:44 p.m. received a report that a Middlebury Union High School student had lost his cell phone on the school bus.
•  On March 7 at 9 a.m. took a report from a woman who said she had just been at her ex-husband’s place to get her personal property and his girlfriend had pulled her hair and spit in her face.
•  On March 7 at 2:01 p.m. received a report from a New Haven man that he had been in a two-car accident in the Porter Hospital parking lot and the other driver, whose plate was traced to a Benson woman, had left the scene.
•  On March 7 at 4:27 p.m. received a report from the Hannaford supermarket that they suspected a customer was using a fake ID from North Carolina; when a staffer called the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles she was told it was a fake ID. But the DMV reportedly called back and said the ID was valid after all.
•  On March 7 at a little before 5 p.m. went to a Middlebury College parking lot with college Public Safety to calm a man who was very upset because he believed someone was in his backyard stealing things. Officers spoke with all parties involved.
•  On March 7 at around 8 p.m. found in the McDonald’s parking lot a car from which it was reported young males had shouted offensive language at a young woman. The officer spoke with the young males and, since the young woman would not give a formal complaint, the officer called the parents of the juveniles in the group.
•  On March 8 at 4:13 a.m. issued three tickets to the owners of cars parked in violation of the winter parking ban.
•  On March 8 at 8:53 a.m. spotted a student smoking behind houses on Charles Avenue and issued the student a citation for being a minor in possession of tobacco.
•  On March 8 at 11:42 a.m. responded to a one-car accident with minor injuries on Middle Road.
•  On March 8 at 2:26 p.m. began investigating a reported an incident of “sexting,” in which one person sends a compromising photo of himself or herself via cell phone, involving two Middlebury Union Middle School students.
•  On March 8 at 12:27 p.m. were told that a female driver had driven away from Maplefields on North Pleasant Street without paying for $42 in gasoline.
•  On March 8 at 8:50 p.m. checked the welfare of a North Pleasant Street resident who reportedly had taken a bunch of pills. The person was transported to Porter Hospital by the Middlebury Volunteer Ambulance Association.
•  While driving south on South Main Street on March 9 at 2:10 a.m. found two college students lying in the roadway at the intersection of Franklin Street. The officer told the two to stay out of the road and to walk home on the sidewalk.
•  On March 9 at around 4 p.m. were told about an incident involving two former spouses in which one reportedly grabbed the other and pulled that person out of the house.
•  On March 9 at 6:30 p.m. followed up at the Middlebury Commons on Buttolph Drive on a case on behalf of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
•  On March 9 at 8:30 p.m. were called to a Middlebury home by a woman who said she heard footsteps downstairs and when she asked who was there, the footsteps stopped. Officers went to the home and found it was the husband who had come home without telling his wife.
•  On March 9 at 10:43 p.m. removed a woman who was the subject of a no-trespass order from a North Pleasant Street residence.
•  On March 10 sent a detail of officers and Police Explorers to Main Street for the chili festival. Police closed Main Street and set up a command post on Park Street.
•  On March 10 at 9:32 a.m. received a report of a horse loose in the Lower Plains Road neighborhood.
•  On March 10 at 10:45 a.m. received four sap buckets found by a citizen.
•  On March 11 at 3:22 a.m. responded to the Porter Hospital emergency room regarding an incapacitated male who was admitted due to his level of intoxication. Police decided to mail court diversion paperwork to him.
•  On March 11 were called to the Courtyard by Marriott to help remove a noisy guest. Hotel management decided to let the guest stay.
•  On March 11 at 7:13 p.m. were told by a woman that she had left her coat on a stone pillar near the Middlebury College track and that she saw it on every lap except for the last one. A male walking the track left just before she did. The missing coat had car keys and a house key in it.
•  On March 11 at 7:35 p.m. were told by a Middlebury man that he had a verbal agreement to exchange his truck for another man’s ATV, some parts and $200. The first man said the second man has not held up his end of the bargain and the first man wants his truck back, but was told by the second man that he’d knock him out if he tried. Police told the first man to go to civil court.
•  On March 11 at 10:47 p.m. were told that a woman was drunk and sending text and phone messages saying she was suicidal. An officer got into the woman’s apartment and found an empty vodka bottle and an empty wine bottle. She was taken to sober up at a facility, where her blood alcohol content tested at 0.289 percent and she was not suicidal. As a point of comparison, the legal BAC for driving is 0.08 percent.
•  On March 12 at 6:43 a.m. received help from Middlebury College Pubic Safety in taking an out-of-control student to Porter Hospital.
