MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police investigated two suspected phone scams on Feb. 22. Police said a local woman reported receiving a call from a man alleging to be her grandson, who said he had been picked up for drunk driving and needed money. When the woman told the caller she did not sound like her grandson, he ended the call.
In the other case, a local man received a call from someone who alleged the man’s grandson had been involved in a car accident. When the man said he had no grandson, the caller hung up the phone.
In other action last week, Middlebury police:
•  Served a temporary restraining order on a local woman on Feb. 20.
•  Helped the AT&T store on Court Street rid itself of an unwanted customer on Feb. 20.
•  Served a temporary restraining order on a local man on Feb. 20.
•  Were informed that someone had taken a handbag from Carol’s Hungry Mind Café on Merchants Row on Feb. 20.
•  Received a report that a Macbook laptop computer had been stolen from Middlebury College’s Warner science building on Feb. 20.
•  Got counseling help for a local man who had been expressing thoughts of harming himself on Feb. 20.
•  Were informed that someone had stolen $120 from a wallet at the Middlebury College Field House on Feb. 23.
•  Served no-trespass notices on Feb. 21 on a couple who were not wanted at an Airport Road property.
•  Responded to a noise complaint at a Merchants Row apartment on Feb. 21.
•  Investigated the reported theft of a purse from an Ilsley Library patron on Feb. 21. Police said some of the contents of the purse were located on the ground near the Ben Franklin store.
•  Served a no-trespass order on Feb. 21 on a woman not wanted at a Court Street apartment. Police said the woman had been found, under the influence of drugs, unresponsive and in a pool of her own urine on the porch of the residence. Police took the woman to Porter Hospital for treatment.
•  Served a no-trespass order on a man who was not wanted at Steve’s Park Diner on Feb. 23.
•  Received a report of a man driving away from the Middlebury Village Depot on Court Street without paying for gas on Feb. 23.
•  Responded to noise complaints in the Main Street and Bakery Lane neighborhoods on Feb. 24.
•  Turned over, to Middlebury College Public Safety, two intoxicated students seen arguing on Main Street on Feb. 24.
•  Were informed that someone had shot a bullet through a mailbox on Halladay Road on Feb. 24.
•  Assisted a local man who had been receiving harassing phone calls from a woman on Feb. 24.
•  Took into protective custody a drunken young woman who had allegedly been causing problems for Middlebury College Public Safety at Porter Hospital on Feb. 26. Police said they took the woman to the Marble Valley Correctional Facility after she allegedly refused to cooperate with the college or the hospital. Police said the woman remained uncooperative with police during the transport and vomited in the rear of the cruiser. Police said they will talk to the Addison County State’s Attorney’s office about potentially filing criminal alcohol charges against the woman.
