VERMONT — A one-car accident in Poultney last Thursday sent an 81-year-old Cornwall man to the hospital.
Vermont State Police said that on Feb. 9 at around 3:30 p.m. troopers responded to a crash on Route 31 in Poultney. Trooper Purdy reported that a vehicle driven by Paul Viko left the roadway hitting multiple mailboxes, a residence and a telephone pole.
Police suspect that Viko had a cardiac event or medical circumstance that contributed to the cause of the crash.
Viko was transported to Rutland Regional Medical Center for evaluation and later transferred to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center for treatment with non-life threatening injuries and later discharged.
Police reported that Viko’s dog was in the vehicle at the time of the crash and was unharmed.
Meanwhile, VSP are looking for help from the public in solving several crimes.
On Feb. 7, police received reports of two burglaries on Shacksboro Road in Shoreham. Police said two neighboring homes were burglarized between 9 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. The homes were entered by force with no one home at the time. Items reported stolen included a flat-screen TV, digital cameras, jewelry, watches, blank checks, a digital photo frame, and possibly a .22 caliber rifle.

Separately, troopers are investigating an attempted burglary at a Bristol residence. Someone had attempted to force entry through a rear sliding door at the home off Lovers Lane, causing an estimated $100 damage to the door handle and a screen. In Ferrisburgh, VSP suspect that someone used a firearm to shoot out six parking lot lights at the Agency of Transportation’s commuter lot at the intersections of Routes 22A and 7 on Feb. 10. VSP are asking anyone with information on the incident to call 802-388-4919.
VSP are continuing to investigate reports from senior citizens of attempted phone scams. Police said some of these individuals making the calls have strong accents possibly indicating the calls are originating from other countries. Troopers are urging citizens not to provide their personal information — like bank account and Social Security numbers — to anyone they do not know. 
In other recent activity, VSP:
•  On Feb. 7 at approximately 12:20 p.m. stopped a vehicle driven on Route 116 in Bristol by Thomas Plantier, 24, of Bristol, and cited Plantier for driving with a criminally suspended license subsequent to civil violations.
•  Are looking into a report that between 9 and 10 p.m. on Feb. 8 mailboxes on Ferson Road in Leicester were vandalized. Initial investigation revealed that two mailboxes had been struck and broken with a rounded object. This is one of several reports of vandalism in the area in the last two months. •  On Feb. 9 at approximately 10:30 a.m. were advised that two inmates — one of them a Brandon man — working outside at the Northeast Correctional Facility in St. Johnsbury had escaped. The inmates are identified as Glenn Garvey, 23, of Brandon and Nathan Jones, 25, of Washington. The escapees were not believed to be armed, nor were they considered dangerous, at the time of their escape. The inmates were tracked by a VSP canine unit and taken into custody without incident at approximately 1:15 p.m.
•  On Feb. 9 at 5:15 p.m. cited Brent LaFave, 49, of Salisbury for driving with a suspended license and possession of a regulated substance following a stop on South Pleasant Street in Middlebury. Police said they found LaFave to be in possession of prescription anti-depressants and morphine medication that did not belong to him.
•  On Feb. 10 at around 9 p.m. stopped a motor vehicle driven by Jeremy Tindall, 18, of Orwell on Swamp Road in Cornwall. Police cited Tindall for possession of marijuana.
