VERGENNES — Vergennes police on Feb. 10 cited a South Burlington man for possession of 1.89 pounds of marijuana following a 1:40 a.m. traffic stop on Main Street.
Police said that department Drug Recognition Expert Brent Newton also tested Justin B. Thayer, 24, on the scene for driving under the influence of drugs, and that Thayer could face DUI-drug charges depending on the results of a blood test administered later that night at Porter Hospital.
Police said they pulled over Thayer’s car when it failed to stop at a red light at the intersection of Main Street and Monkton Road, and alleged they smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.
They said Thayer refused to allow a search of the car, but police obtained a warrant to do so and allegedly found 26 bags of marijuana. Police ordered the car towed and impounded it, and then cited Thayer for possession.
In other incidents between Feb. 6 and 12, Vergennes police:
•  On Feb. 6 dealt with a Monkton Road barking dog complaint.
•  On Feb. 6 cited Connor Robare, 18, of Winooski for speeding and lack of insurance after stopping him for allegedly driving 60 mph in a 30 mph zone on West Main Street.
•  On Feb. 7 assisted the U.S. Border Patrol in performing a background check.
•  On Feb. 7 notified a Northlands Job Corps student of a death in the family.
•  On Feb. 7 checked around a Cataract Lane residence after a complaint of repeated knocking on a door.
•  On Feb. 7 were told a car had rolled onto an Ice House Court lawn; it had been driven off by the time police arrived.
•  On Feb. 7 calmed an arguing couple at a Main Street apartment.
•  On Feb. 8 heard from a Main Street resident that a main had grabbed her and told her he had been watching her; she ran to her apartment and called police, who couldn’t find him.
•  On Feb. 8 dealt with a minor two-car accident on Main Street.
•  On Feb. 9 helped the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad at an East Street residence.
•  On Feb. 9 heard from a Hillside Drive resident that two prescription drug bottles had allegedly been stolen the day before.
•  On Feb. 9 looked for a teen at a Vergennes Union High School basketball game on behalf of Middlebury police, who found the youth elsewhere later.
•  On Feb. 9 responded to a report of two cars being driven erratically together on Route 7 in Ferrisburgh and ticketed both, one for lack of insurance and one for driving with plates assigned to another car.
•  On Feb. 10 were told a GPS unit, a portable DVD player, DVDs and a wallet had been stolen from a car parked on Green Street.
•  On Feb. 10 looked for a student who was truant from VUHS and learned from his mother that he was at home but would not return to school.
•  On Feb. 12 ticketed a number of cars that were in violation of the city’s winter ban on overnight on-street parking.
