VERMONT — On Monday, Jan. 23, at 20 minutes past noon Vermont State Police Trooper Steven Gelder responded to Route 30 in Sudbury for a single-vehicle crash.
Gelder found a tractor-trailer with flatbed driven southbound by Mario Gervais, 47, of Quebec had exited off the travel portion of the wet road and collided with a guardrail. The vehicle traveled down an embankment before coming to a position of uncontrolled rest off the travel portion of Route 30.
The vehicle ruptured its diesel fuel tank, and fuel spilled onto the roadway.
Route 30 was closed for several hours until cleanup crews could removed the contaminated material.
Gervais, who was wearing a seat belt, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The truck was a total loss.
Members of the Castleton and Orwell fire departments, along with members of Vermont Agency of Transportation and Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles, assisted with investigation and cleanup of this crash.
In the only three incidents between Jan. 23 and Jan. 30 reported by VSP operating out of the New Haven barracks, Trooper Joseph Szarejko:
•On Jan. 19 at approximately 4:20 a.m. responded to the Ripton General Store for a reported burglary. Numerous items were reported stolen including cigarettes and money. Anybody with any information is asked to contact the New Haven State Police Barracks at 802-388-4919.
•On Jan. 25 transported Korey Koch, 22, of Vergennes to the New Haven state police barracks and cited her for possession of heroin and marijuana along with providing false information to a police officer, careless and negligent driving and reckless endangerment of a child. The charges stemmed from a Jan. 21 incident where police said Koch flipped a car at the intersection of Little Otter Lane and Route 7 in Ferrisburgh and left two young children in the car while she went to a nearby residence. Police and emergency services rescued the children and took them and Koch to Fletcher Allen hospital the night of the incident.
•This week reported that on Jan. 5 at 2:58 a.m. police responded to a reported one-car crash on East Street in New Haven. Police found a 2006 Chevy Malibu was totaled and the driver missing. The trooper since then identified the driver as Peter Thibodeau, 30, of Bristol, and cited him into court for leaving the scene of an accident and for careless and negligent driving.
