Middlebury Police Log: Alleged thief returns to the scene of the crime

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Virginia L. Gillett, 27, of Salisbury for retail theft, in connection with an incident at Green Mountain Shoe and Apparel in The Centre shopping plaza on Jan. 1. Store officials reported having a video of Gillett stealing a pair of shoes that she allegedly wore to the store the very next day, according to police.
In other action last week, Middlebury police:
•  Responded to a report of a vehicle stuck in the Creek Road Car Wash on Jan. 2.
•  Assisted Middlebury Union Middle School officials with an uncooperative student on Jan. 3.
•  Received a report of a hit-and-run accident involving two vehicles in The Centre shopping plaza parking lot on Jan. 3.
•  On Jan. 4 served a no-trespass order on a local man who was not wanted at a Case Street residence.
•  Assisted Middlebury Union High School officials with an uncooperative student on Jan. 4.
•  Assisted a local family in calming their distraught, teenage daughter on Main Street on Jan. 5.
•  Received a report on Jan. 6 about a student not attending classes at MUMS.
•  Questioned three people seen cutting up scrap metal from railroad tracks off MacIntyre Lane on Jan. 6. The trio claimed they had received permission from Vermont Rail Systems to cut and haul the metal, but could not name the official who had granted permission, according to police. Police told the people to unload the metal and leave it until they could prove they had permission to take it.
•  Assisted Middlebury fire officials at the scene of a chimney fire at a South Street residence on Jan. 6.
•        Helped Middlebury College Public Safety with an unruly person on Adirondack View on Jan. 8.
