VERGENNES — Vergennes police on Dec. 28 charged a city man with stealing jewelry, much of it antique, from a family member at a Mountain View Lane home.
Cited was Nicholas Piper, 33, for grand larceny; police said they questioned him after the theft. Police allege that he stole jewelry that the victim estimated was worth between $5,000 and $10,000 and said that they recovered many of the items from pawnshops in Burlington and South Burlington.
In other incidents between Dec. 24 and Jan. 1, Vergennes police:
•  On Dec. 24 took a drunken woman from the John Graham Shelter to a detoxification center in Burlington.
•  On Dec. 24 helped the driver of a car broken down at the junction of Routes 7 and 22A call a tow truck and find a ride.
•  On Dec. 26 responded to a two-car accident on West Main Street and processed one of the drivers for driving under the influence of drugs after smelling marijuana coming from one of the vehicles; police said charges will depend on the result of testing.
•  On Dec. 27 ticketed eight cars in violation of the city’s winter ban on parking on city streets during the night. Between Dec. 1 and March 31 there is no parking on city streets 2 to 6:30 a.m. This block of time allows public works staff to plow Vergennes streets without cars in their way. Vehicles left on the street during those hours will be ticketed or towed at the owner’s expense.
•  On Dec. 27 helped Vermont State Police at a one-car accident in Ferrisburgh.
•  On Dec. 27 responded to a one-car accident on New Haven Road.
•  On Dec. 28 checked out a report of a man shooting a rifle at 1 Alden Place and spoke to the building owner, who said he had fired a shotgun on open land behind the property.
•  On Dec. 29 spoke to a person who identified three people who were videoed during a burglary at Toys R Us in Williston and then shown on television, and then relayed the information to Williston police.
•  On Dec. 30 were told by a West Main Street resident that men paid to remove furniture and trash from a property had not completed the task after being paid; police told them to return.
•  On Dec. 30 ticketed a juvenile for underage drinking at a West Main Street traffic stop.
•  On Dec. 30 helped the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad at a School Street call.
•  On Dec. 31 were told a windshield wiper had been torn off a car parked on Green Street.
•  On Dec. 31 checked a report of a single gunshot near Booth Woods, but found nothing.
•  On Dec. 31 stopped about 400 cars at a Route 7 sobriety checkpoint; police said they did not cite any drunk drivers, but arrested one woman on an outstanding Chittenden County warrant.
•  On Jan. 1 arrested Christopher Favor, 25, of Brandon for drunk driving on Route 7 after receiving a citizen tip. Police alleged that Favor’s blood-alcohol content tested at a little more than double the limit for driving (the legal limit is 0.08 percent), and they also processed him for DUI-drugs.
•  On Jan. 1 helped VSP at a domestic dispute in Monkton.
•  On Jan. 1 checked out a Bowman Road home to make sure all was secure in the aftermath of a domestic dispute in a Chittenden County parking lot.
