FEMA aid station makes rounds

MIDDLEBURY — The Federal Emergency Management Agency Mobile Disaster Recovery Center will wrap up a three-day stop in Middlebury at 6 p.m. Thursday. The FEMA team set up shop at VFW Post 7823 off of Exchange Street, helping Addison County residents to register with FEMA and find assistance for damage from the recent flooding.
“If people have had damage to their home, business, or their driveway, they should apply for aid with us,” said Chris Pettit, a FEMA employee with the recovery center, describing the types of relief offered. “We’re here to assess damages that prevent access, sanitation, safety or functionality.”
A group of specialized employees travel with the recovery center, including a temporary housing officer, a mitigation specialist and a representative from the U.S. Small Business Administration.
If you need temporary housing, FEMA maintains a list of local rentals available for disaster victims at go.usa.gov/0fl . Registration for housing and other aid is available both at the recovery center and by phone at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). You can find them online at www.fema.gov. The deadline for registration is Oct. 31, and applicants are encouraged to register early.
The Recovery Center will travel to the Bethel Town Hall on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 and 2. Then they’ll return to Addison County, setting up in the Hancock Town Hall for Oct. 3-5.
On Oct. 6-8, the recovery center will be in South Royalton at the Journey Church. At all sites, the recovery staff will be available from noon to 6 p.m. on the first day and 8 a.m. to 6 p .m. on the following two days.
