VERGENNES — Vergennes police issued two drug citations to Vergennes Union High School students last week.
On Sept. 12, city police cited Jake Wrightington, 18, for illegal possession of controlled substances. Police allege Wrightington had in his possession a “sandwich bag full” of pills that they said were Ritalin and were not prescribed to him. Police confiscated the pills.
Police said an investigation is ongoing related to this case in which other charges are possible, including against other VUHS students.
On Sept. 15 school officials called police to VUHS because they had discovered what they believed to be marijuana in the possession of a 16-year-old student. Police cited the student into juvenile court for alleged possession of about 3.5 grams of marijuana.
In other incidents between Sept. 12 and 18, Vergennes police:
•  On Sept. 12 cited Douglas Yantz, 89, of Vergennes for failing to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk in a Sept. 7 accident that injured two youths. Police had believed that it was a hit-and-run accident, but determined Yantz had stopped and spoken to the youths, ages 12 and 15, who were both treated at Porter Hospital and released.
•  On Sept. 12, checked out a report of a car being driven recklessly in the Goodrich Corp. parking lot and on West Street; police found the car in a driveway, but it was unoccupied.
•  On Sept. 12 were told of writing on a window at Country Home Products accusing an employee of stealing from the Meigs Road firm; police determined nothing had been taken.
•  On Sept. 12 dealt with a barking dog complaint on Monkton Road.
•  On Sept. 12 looked for kids reporting to be throwing vegetables put out for sale on Panton Road, but did not find them.
•  On Sept. 12 could not find a man reported to be hanging around outside a South Water Street apartment wearing a mask.
•  On Sept. 13 began trying to determine the identity of a man contacting a 17-year-old Vergennes girl via Facebook, at the request of her mother. Police said they were enlisting other agencies in the effort after the man declined to identify himself.
•  On Sept. 13 warned a city man out of jail on conditions to abide by his curfew.
•  On Sept. 13 accepted unused pain meds for destruction.
•  On Sept. 13 arrested Michael Mortier, 39, of Bristol for simple assault. Police allege that Mortier, who was on furlough from the Marble Valley Correctional Center, threw an unprovoked punch at a woman outside a city dental office. Mortier was returned to MVCC by the Addison County Sheriff’s Department; there, police said the Counseling Service of Addison County would reevaluate his case.
•  On Sept. 13 aided Immigration and Naturalization Services officials in a local investigation.
•  On Sept. 14 looked into the theft of a bicycle from VUHS and found it nearby off Monkton Road.
•  On Sept. 15 were told by a Main Street gas station employee that a woman in a Jeep with New York plates gave him part of a marijuana cigarette as a tip for pumping gas; police could not find the Jeep.
•  On Sept. 15 cited William Thiess, 65, of Vergennes for forgery and larceny. Police allege that Thiess stole a check from his mother without permission and wrote it to himself for $300.
•  On Sept. 15 helped a motorist get into a locked car on Main Street.
•  On Sept. 16 closed a car trunk found open at the commuter lot off North Main Street.
•  On Sept. 16 cited Andrew Saad, 21, of New Jersey for possession of marijuana after a Main Street traffic stop.
•  On Sept. 17 went with the department canine unit to help Drug Enforcement Agency personnel at a Burlington drug arrest in which heroin and crack cocaine was seized.
•  On Sept. 17 met with a Hinesburg resident who believed some tools recovered in a recent burglary case might be his; police are checking the claim.
•  On Sept. 17 issued a no-trespass order to a man on behalf of Subway restaurant personnel.
•  On Sept. 18 dealt with two dog complaints, speaking to the owner of a noisy dog on Ice House Court and picking up a stray on West Main Street and bringing it to the Vergennes Animal Hospital.
•  On Sept. 18 called in experts to investigate a possible attempted arson case at a Thomas Circle home that had been previously damaged by a fire; police said an accelerant had been sprayed inside the home.
