Vergennes Police Log: City police deal with a variety of incidents
VERGENNES — Vergennes police handled a variety of incidents between Aug. 8 and 14, including arguments, traffic problems, medical issues and one assault case in which they said the evidence proved too slim to make an arrest.
Between those dates, city police:
• On Aug. 8 went to the city green to find a man who had been reported earlier to be jumping in front of cars on Route 7. They found a homeless New Mexico resident who said he was depressed and experiencing mental health problems, and police took him to Porter Hospital to meet with the Counseling Service of Addison County.
• On Aug. 8 responded to a report of a woman pushing a stroller and acting in an unusual manner near the railroad tracks not far from Route 7, but could not find her.
• On Aug. 8 directed traffic around a disabled cement mixer on West Main Street.
• On Aug. 8 issued a civil ticket for driving with a suspended license to a Panton resident after stopping a car on Green Street that had been reported as being driven erratically.
• On Aug. 8 called the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad to help a depressed Booska Court resident who was abusing alcohol and anti-depressant drugs, an act taken after checking in on the man at the request of a concerned acquaintance. VARS took him to Porter Hospital.
• On Aug. 8 began investigating an alleged assault at Northlands Job Corps in which a student claimed other students attacked him after he agreed to fight one other student. Police said the victim claimed not to know the identity of his assailants, and as of this Monday they said had not been able to issue citations, but that the investigation continued.
• On Aug. 9 began investigating the theft of wire and other material from a Green Mountain Power storage building off Mechanic Street.
• On Aug. 9 found a Great Dane with a broken leg near Green Street and took it to the Vergennes Animal Hospital.
• On Aug. 9 went to a city gas station because a man was making an attendant uneasy; he was gone when police arrived.
• On Aug. 9 helped VARS at a White Street residence.
• On Aug. 9 took a report of a minor hit-and-run car accident in a Main Street parking lot.
• On Aug. 10 aided the Department of Corrections by taking a DNA sample from a released prisoner.
• On Aug. 10 went with the department canine unit to help Vermont State Police at a Salisbury traffic stop; police said after some drugs were already found in a vehicle, the dog alerted for more and an additional pound of marijuana was found.
• On Aug. 10 went to a Union Street home after a neighbor reported hearing yells and loud bangs. Police found a couple had been arguing, but not fighting, and the man involved admitted breaking furniture.
• On Aug. 11 helped VARS at a White Street residence.
• On Aug. 12 helped motorists get into their locked cars, one on Main Street and one on East Street.
• On Aug. 12 were told a car parked on Main Street had been vandalized by having its hood scratched.
• On Aug. 12 dealt with a barking dog complaint at a Main Street apartment building.
• On Aug. 12 responded to a report of three loud kids near the city green.
• On Aug. 12 told a man who was knocking on his ex-girlfriend’s apartment door to leave, and to stop contacting her by phone.
• On Aug. 13 calmed a yelling man who was involved in a family phone dispute at a Sunset Drive home.
• On Aug. 13 helped VSP at a family fight in Addison.
• On Aug. 13 told a man to stop harassing his ex-girlfriend by phone.
• On Aug. 14 accepted prescription drugs that had been found in the Booth Woods neighborhood.
• On Aug. 14 checked a report of youths fighting behind Vergennes Union Elementary School and discovered they were just wrestling and fooling around.
