Bristol Police Log: Police cite Bristol man for four break-ins

BRISTOL — Police arrested a Bristol man last Wednesday evening for allegedly breaking into three East Street homes multiple times; then they nabbed him again early Friday morning for allegedly breaking into another East Street home.
Carroll Smith, 49, of Bristol was cited for five counts of unlawful trespass into dwelling place and two counts of attempted unlawful trespass into a dwelling for the Aug. 10 incidents, and for unlawful trespass and violation of conditions of release for the Aug. 12 incident.
Bristol Police Chief Kevin Gibbs was called to a report of several break-ins that Wednesday at around 5:30 p.m. when he was at Bristol Fitness for a workout.
Chris Perkett, a friend of Gibbs’ who was also at the gym, asked Gibbs if he wanted him to come along as backup. Perkett is Addison County deputy state’s attorney.
“I did it to help out a friend,” said Perkett, who was due to be married only a few days later.
When they got to East Street, a resident told Chief Gibbs that a man had entered a home, exited it, attempted to re-enter that home but upon finding that the homeowner had locked the door instead entered another East Street residence.
Gibbs asked Perkett to watch the back door, and then went in the front door himself.
“As I stepped into the home I saw a figure duck out of the hallway into what appeared to be a kitchen or dining room,” Gibbs said in a report.
Gibbs, who knew the man, ordered him to the floor “noting an object in his hand that appeared to be a water bottle. He told me he had permission to be in the home and initially did not comply with my order to get on the floor. I ordered him again to the floor and he complied.”
Gibbs cuffed the man, Carroll Smith, and took him to the cruiser.
Witnesses told Gibbs that Smith had entered one house where, according to the chief’s report, the resident had been “sitting at her home computer when she heard someone come in the door. She said friends often entered without knocking so she did not immediately get concerned.”
When the intruder passed by her, she determined that he was confused. She got him to leave and locked the door.
The same man reportedly also entered another residence three times, before being locked out by the owners, who were home. He apparently then went on to the house where Gibbs apprehended him.
Gibbs took Smith to the Chittenden County Correctional Center, where he spent the night for lack of bail.
But the story didn’t end there. Gibbs was called early in the morning less than a36 hours later to a report of an intruder at another East Street home. Gibbs said the intruder had lunged at the 14-year-old boy who had found him. Gibbs apprehended the alleged trespasser, who turned out to be Smith, and arrested him at about 2 a.m. that morning.
Perkett said someone in the state’s attorney’s office besides him would prosecute Smith to avoid any hint of impropriety.
In other recent Bristol police activity:
Gibbs reported that he had arrested Andrea Malzac, 44, of Bristol on July 9 at a home on Taylor Avenue and cited her for domestic assault. Gibbs said Malzac allegedly punched her boyfriend when he tried to retrieve his cell phone.
Separately, Bristol police received a report that someone had vandalized the tennis courts at the Bristol Recreation Fields sometime in the first week of August. The vandal drove a steel pipe into the new blacktop and pulled out cables holding up the nets. Gibbs said he was investigating, but it was unlikely the responsible party could be found.
“It was discouraging because they just had it resurfaced,” he said.
Gibbs also acknowledged that he had fallen behind on filing press reports of Bristol police activity, and pledged to catch up on the reports soon.
